any thoughts on how to go about putting in a centre arm rest to a base model E200... I presume these attached to the passenger seat, but unsure whether there will be brackets 'deep within all of them' which would accept the 'addition' (if I can find one)

It depends of whether your car has the same style of trim as a higher model which would have come with the armrest. It is possible to remove the parts from a seat with the armrest and fit it to another seat, but, trust me, you really don't want to do this! Ideally you would want to swap the passenger seat from one with the same trim, but with an armrest. I think you're only realistic source for the parts is specialist (Merc) breakers, since the trim is typically the first thing that the dealers decide not to stock. I am not surprised. I have seen the pages and pages of different variations of trim colour, sport, velour, sport leather, imitation leather, upgraded trim, police spec, ambulance spec, electric, heating, folding, orthopaedic, multicontour, etc etc which are possible. Until you asked, I'd never thought buying a seat could be so complicated!

To answer the original question, the required brackets bolt onto the basic seat frame.
