Centre console illumination (or lack of) - Electrical proble

Having just bought a 1993 E300TD (UK spec), there appears to be no back lighting behind any of the centre console controls, i.e. switches, temp controls, gear selector position. This makes things difficult at night !! Any suggestions as to where the problem lies ? as I cant seem to find a single fuse which is dedicated to this function. Additionally the seat belt warning lamp never illuminates when seat belts are unused. This may be a clue ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Graham,

Your 124 diesel, I am assuming and may be I shouldn't that the speedo lights are working & the dimmer is switched to high. (The dimmer is the left roller switch on the speedo clock turn it while the side lights are on.) If both of these are ok. Then the fuse is ok. There is a fuse for the clock illumination, this is for all your dash lights. If all the above is ok then there may be a wiring fault.

As for the seat belt warning light. If the seat belt light does not flash when the ignition is first switched on. Try a bulb first. I do not think they are related. If I am wrong, one of my estimed "collegues" who comment on this forum will correct me.

Andy, Thanks for the message, however I'm still in the dark !   Dashboard lights work just fine and are perfectly adjustable using the left hand roller switch. Any other suggestions or do I need to start lifting panels ?

I'll try the bulb in the seatbelt warning lamp also.
