Anybody have any recommendations on removal and replacement of the centrifugal governor on a 190E with a 744 type automatic transmission. I have a no-shift problem and have ruled out the kickdown solenoid under the gas pedal and also checked out the vacuum modulator, which appears to be working.

I have come to the conclusion that the helical gear on the centrifugal governor has probably gotten damaged. It looks really difficult if not impossible to get the governor out without dropping the transmission. I was initially going to try dropping out the driveshaft and hopefully allow the transmission to tilt down far enough to access it, but I'm not sure that will work. The working space is virtually nil, so I'm thinking I might eve have to pull out the entire transmission. That also looks like a heck of a job, as I can't even see all the fasteners.

Does anyone have any experience with pulling the governor and have any tricks on how to do it without pulling the transmission. If not, any guidelines on pulling the transmission itself?

Since I'm on the transmission issue, any idea on fluids that can be used in this trans? The owners manual says to use MB fluid. Does anyone know of any alternate types that could be used? Thanks.
