..Acceleration?

I spoke to a Merc specialist today, and he said that he put a 380 differential in a 500 SEC and the performance difference was huge.

So much so the chap with the SEC wrote it off 2 months after

Can someone explain why this would improve performance please?

Thanks.

The 380 diff will have a lower final drive ratio, so your car will be quicker from the lights but the revs will be higher at speed.
You speedo will be out too.

Right. Anyway of correcting the speedo reading tho?

Im looking at all possibilities of getting more from the 500 SE.

Want more torque really, as it has enough BHP.

Whilst it will improve the acceleration it will also reduce the top speed and kill what little fuel economy your 500 had.

That was the problem I had fitting a V6 and auto box into a transit diesel, acceleration was wonderful, but the top speed of 70 killed the whole thing.

thirsty is an understatement. I would have said that your average MPG would drop to 10, plus you will have the totally wrong gear ratios.

Yeh he said top speed would be affected.

So would the top speed effectively be like that of a 380?

Could i not use say a 420 differential? Although im assuming the 380 would be quicker in the 500 then the 420.

Yeh the fuel ecomnomy would be next to nothing.. As it drinks like a beast as it is.
So what would you guys do to get more from a 500 SE?

Would you steer away from the idea? I really would love to improve the acceleration on her.

You can get 25% more BHP with under pulleys, not that practical in the UK weather climate.

Could you expand on that for me please Malcolm? Where would i get these from?

Would it improve the Torque by around 20%, as thats my main aim really.

Under pulley came from the USA. They reduce the diameter of the crankshaft pulley along with the other pulleys.

Do a Google search under pulley and see what comes up.

Sounds abit like lightening pulleys no?

There seems to be some for it and some against.

Whats your opinion on it Malcolm? I suspect on a 1990 Mercedes it would probably have quite a big difference? As on one car they tested on from 1999 it gave a 11 BHP increase?

Problem is finding someone who would do it for the W126?

I should have said 20 bhp I am sorry, very tired tonight, in this country its not that good really we have a much bigger demand on the electrics.
Its a hard question as other devices just use more fuel in order to increase the output. Buy the AMG engine on Ebay 500 BHP.

Under pulley

alters ratios. That's it.

Nope: -

The reason for the smaller sized pulley is to speed up the rpm of the blower (kompressor) hence getting more cold air in for combustion.

Short term effects are excellent, but the people who do this regularly are prepared to sacrifice reliability for performance.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong with this *deep analysis*

I have not heard it that way, the only way that I have heard of is to reduce the size of the crankshaft pulley thus reducing the output from the alternator and water pump etc.

I can see a turbo going on there soon,I have that feeling. :D

Damn now you got me thinking..

If only it wasnt in america..

Lets say i was to buy a AMG engine and Trans to stick in.. What else would need to be changed? Other then brakes ofcourse.. I take it the exhaust would also need to be replaced etc? Fuel pump?
