I attached a 5 second recording of this to upload, I did try to upload a video it but the file is too large, so tried mp3 but that is not allowed. So I have attached it as a zip, you might need to download. You can trust me ;)

Essentially, at tick over, dug dug dug dug dug. About 3 or 4 times a second.

Any ideas ?

SL350 2009. 50k miles.

Maybe that's the issue!
Alternately, maybe the sound is poor quality because of the iphone video and then converting it to audio via VLC. I must admit my guitaring never sounded that great when recorded on my phone ;-)

I've just compared audio and video and there is no loss of sound quality from video to mp3. The video file is only going to show the belt and pulleys at the front of the engine. I won't be uploading the video to youtube, sorry blobcat.

It just makes it easier for the forum and more likely to get looked at. ;)

Oh well, in that case I might have to lose out on getting some of the help available here, at least this time because - youtube account to upload. I can email the video to someone if they are kind enough to add it to youtube for me. If any one wants to PM me with their email. (Cheeky I know, sorry).

This morning I have found lots and lots of videos on youtube with the same sound. Example:

Lots of varying comments across the slew of videos, and comments range from "Mine has done that for 60k miles with no issues" to "Its your engine, it's broke".
There is a lot of duplication on the comments with the majority of comments falling into one of the categories below:

1) Lots of them do it, its normal
2) I changed my oil it got worse. I changed the oil back it got better
3) Cylinder scoring - but several people checked bores and no scoring
4) Cam followers - some folks saying the noise is not the right timbre for cam followers
5) Oil gallery not feeding sufficient oil at low tick over
6) Its broke

Having watched a dozen and read the comments, I am starting to think the following:

1) It is very common
2) It seemed to start happening on my car not long after I got an oil warning light 60 miles from home and the only nearby motorfactors sold me some oil that was pretty cheap but the right viscosity.

I was not concerned about the loss of oil or the cheap top up oil because:
The last service was done by the selling (non MB) dealer and who knows what half baked service they did
I only topped up 250ml and the car will be serviced soon by an MB indy
250 ml is well within expected consumption for the distance driven since the last service

Conclusion.
Monitor
Get it serviced and monitor
Discuss with the technician and ask advice

In your Zip I can hear a very faint ticking sound. Other than that sounds like a diesel tractor same as my OM651

Strange eh? They only sound like that when the mic is right up close to the serpentine belt, listening with one's ears anywhere else they sound like this:

So to answer the two comments about my car sounding like a diesel, yes if you put your ears on the pulleys, otherwise it sounds glorious, thanks.

Such a lot of poor fuel around at the moment it could be that or if the engine is GDI the injectors can make a ticking sound my BMW does which is normal
