Hi all, I'm in need of an estate and since I can't find a nice W124 for sensible money I've started thinking about a W210. Am I likely to be disappointed? The W124 is usually regarded as the last of the 'real' Mercs, so what does that make the W210?
Should I get a 300TD or a 320 CDI? I quite like the smell of cooking oil out of the exhaust so that probably rules the 320 out.
What else should I be looking out for? What are the common faults?

Hi roadhog you obvously havent being paying attention to the forum. For uk Rust electrical faults and gearbox problems. Valeo radiator leaking coolant into auto box on some versions. Rust causing suspension failure on some. Some members report totally favourite experience with this model . Anyweb currently carrying out poll on this model. Rusting absent from Australian cars so far. The early 210 had a safety downgrade with part of the foot well area being vulnerable. Further there are reports of the 5 speed auto box causing problems and having to be replaced .Car can be a good buy for the money provided you have a thorough check of matters outlined above. Petrol version which passes rigorous test will not likely develop serious faults if looked after.

you can still get a 124 for sensible money

ours, 300 TE. Still for sale. We've just gone to the 210, 320 CDI. It really was no contest given that we are used to a 300, and a C280. I don't think my small brain could have coped with having a car that didn't deliver the same kind of kick as the others when pressed.
The economy is better than the 300, and the toys are newer, but you can spot the ancestry in the ride quite easily. Evolution rather than revolution I think.

Hi roadhog you obvously havent being paying attention to the forum.

Sorry.... :)

ours, 300 TE. Still for sale.

I'm after an oil burner, sorry. I'm about to have a look at a '99 T-reg 300TD. I guess a good warranty might help?
Thanks for the quick replies anyway :)

The 210 can have some rust problems and many things here were the rust is.

The rest of the car has no real problems it uses the same 722,6 gearbox as used today, The Valeo issue has never applied to the 210, in all they are are a nice car to upgrade too

Malcolm are you sure about the valeo issue? also the 722,6 gearbox do you mean the five forward gears and one reverse, hence total of 6..There were some problems here with the early 210 (5) speed (forward) gear box. The 211 has a seven speed (forward) gear box ....... Am I mistaken?

Hi Nick, how are you :Dthe very first 210's could have had the 722.5 box, the 722.6 box came along for 1997 cars.

The 211 also uses the 722.6 unless specified for the 722.9

the Valeo issue affects the 203-211-209 cars in the main though one or two car in other ranges have had contamination, but this is not a general thing to be worried over
