Changing lamp in automatic gear selector housing

The lamp has gone in the fascia that indicates which gear you have selected on the automatic gearbox console and I can't see how you replace it. Also my rear head rests won't lock upright. My car is a 1996 S class it's a fantastic car only had it 11 months but think it's superb. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Malcom, I know they're minor things but it would be nice to have them working. Can't believe how knowlegable you are about these things, looking at the posts you reply to it must be a full time job!

If it's the same as the W124, all you have to do is remove the central plastic trim around the gearshift lever, then the horizontal wood panel. This is retained by a single screw at the rear and then it 'unhooks' from the bottom of the vertical forward panel below the ashtray. Reach down at the front end of the clear indicator panel, pull out (downwards, just a push fit) the bulbholder and replace. Simple job (on mine anyway).

Thanks for the reply Tom. I can remove the selector trim, it's the "wood" trim I can't remove as this goes from the rear to the top and incorporates ashtry , radio andswitches etc. you'd think they would make it easy to change lamp!

My thoughts exactly. You sure your wood panel is not separated from the upright one, just below the ashtray?

I just replaced the shutter on that gear shift in my 1998 S320.
It is alot dependent on which autobox you have. You can have
the 722.6 but also the 722.5. Do you have a S/W switch (722.6) or
a S/E switch (722.5)?

To remove the single-piece wood, you have to make a tool
out of 1.5mm pianostring or similar and catch a tab
at the back of the opening between the gear-shift and the wood.
This will release the back hook of the wood, so at the same time,
insert a sharp object (preferably the cheap, original, plastic wedge
from MB, best tool I ever bought...) to lift the back of the wood up.
Be careful not to break the wood, needless to say, it is expensive.

If you do have the 722.6 have a read at;
http://mb.braingears.com/W210/w210/trans2_centconshift.htm

I think that for the 722.6, the lamps used are LED and should
just be there or not. Are the rest of the numbers lightened?

thanks for that mine must be the 722.5 S/E switch. I've had that part of and can't get to the lamp , it looks as if you've to take the whole console out!!! as the wood goes right up incorporating the radio and heating controls. There is nothing lit so I presume the one lamp does it all.

Thanks Malcom, don't know if I want to strip all that out to change a lamp. For interest I have just had a front suspension spring changed at a local independant and asked them to check out the outdoor temperature lamp as it wasn't working ,the gear shift lamp and the head rests. When he removed the cluster there were 6 lamps missing, things like traction control, ABS,SRS etc. He told me it's "common practice" with dodgy dealers to do this. Worth remembering to start the car yourself when buying and checking the lights.
As for the lamp in the gear shift and the inoperable head rests he's suggested I leave them a while as they can be costly as I have just spent more money.
Thanks for all your help since I've been on the forum your time and advice saves us all money.
