This is a very basic question, but I want to make sure that I will not regret starting on this project. I like to change the oil in my diesels every 6k and would like to start doing this job myself on my C class, I have done it on previous cars.

I know where the filer and the sump plug are located, and that the filer housing is under a torque setting, which can be overcome by marking the present setting with a pen, but would like to know if I need a tool to take the filter out?

Also, do I new a new sump plug seal, it looks re-usable to me, and lastly how many liters of oil are required.

Many thanks, Andrew

I think you have the filter cap with 'flats' on as opposed to two nuts holding the cap down, in which case you need a 76 mm 14-flute cap socket, available from motor factors, Hellfords and even eBay - not expensive. Tighten down to 25 Nm. The sump plug SHOULD have a new copper washer fitted, but I have used them a second time without problems as have many of us if we cared to admit it! Oil capacity about 5.5 litres. If you have a dipstick (I'm not too acquainted with the more up-to-date models, but some don't even have an engine oil dipstick!), put in about 4.5 litres, then top up using this.
Hope this helps.
Tom.

no dipstick, best to measure the amount needed and the marker pen method is easier

Andrew, when changing the fuel filter take great care re cleanliness of the operation and fill the cleaned filter bowl with filtered fuel before reassembly.
The high pressure fuel pumps on the CDi engine can be damaged by not running fuel through them. They require fuel as a lubricant. It might be worth doing a little research before doing the job, especially if you have access to a manual.
