According to the Haynes manual, the charcoal canister in the evaporative emmissions system on my '95 E320 (W124) should be replaced every 4 years/72000 miles. The car has now covered around 240,000 miles and still runs well, no petrol smells etc, but I have no idea when, if ever the present canister was replaced. The service manager at my local Mercedes main dealer tells me that they have no hard and fast rules about changing these, and in fact don't usually bother unless there is a problem with emmissions when a car is put on the diagnostics machine - if readings are over the limit then they will probably replace the canister. Anyone got any further information on this :?:
