Ive just been doing my accounts and in an old paying in book Ive found 5 cheques from Nov 2006, would it be ok to bank these or do I risk costs if they dont go through.

Cheques are normally valid for 3 months though I have put them through without a problem, I would ring your bank and ask

I thought about ringing the bank but it would mean 2 hours on the phone pressing different options before I get the chance to speak to someone in india..............

They call me a privileged customer and I have a code.

When you become old, you will have one :D:D

Even if the teller doesn't notice, the clearing bank will and, as sure as night follows day, they'll have a "charge" for each "out of date" cheque.
Malcolm might be right, but I thought the limit was six months...

I thought it was 6 months and I also thought you had to contact the payer to write another cheque. I had to do this with a dividend payment.

All cheques have a six month life span.. But one thing u do need to do, especially if any of the cheques are from personal accounts is let the ppl who wrote the cheques know you are onlty getting around to lodging them..otherwise funds may be light and that could create more problems .. and its nice when you have a businesss and can forget or not worry about lodging a few cheques

Could be 6 months , but in any case it is time out for these

I have a feeling that they may try and pass them, you will have to learn another language and ring

Go back to the cheque owners if you can, explain what's happened and see if they will reissue, perhaps against the return of the old cheque obviously uncashed. I would but I'm honest John Bull. Worth a try first, it might reduce the problem down a bit. Offer a discount against the next deal for their cooperation?

Helens link was good, I am sure that I have put old cheques through.

My problem is that I cannot remember who they are from after a few days :D

This is the problem, I dont know who they are from and with 2500 invoices to go through its not really worth the time etc, two cheques are from overseas (ceylon) and another only has signiture and no name.

Thanks all anyway its not enough money to worry about really.

Happy new new year to all,

You are allowed 6 months to cash a cheque. You are allowed 6 years to claim an unpaid cheque through the courts (providing you have tried to cash it in within the first 6 months & it bounced).
