Choked inlet manifold on ML270

Definitely a YES with "around town" driving. On open road work, with fairly constant boost, no obvious improvement.

Actually, I have also noticed improoved round town driving.

I recently obtained 44.9mpg (indicated) going from Finchely to Ruislip along the a406 /a40 at around 6:30 pm, I was astounded!

Slightly better running with a more stable idle. Absolutely exactly the same fuel economy.

Edit: To clarify, to date I have only disabled the EGR, not cleaned or replaced the manifold. I am planning to replace my manifold this weekend and I do expect a little better fuel economy after that. My car has just turned up 130,000km on the original manifold which I believe is more than most. It has mainly done freeway driving with constant speed which means the swirl flaps are not worked as much. I wouldn't bother replacing it at all except it is leaking oil.

The best i have seen in my w210 320cdi is high 48mpg's. Would like to be able to break the 50mpg barrier. It all adds up and the egr mod has to be a help.

On my other cars the official difference between the ones with EGR and not is 2mpg, which I feel is accurate.
Engines without EGR have noticeably more torque at low revs load.

Do inlet manifolds on the ML270 have an estimated lifespan? My 2002 ML is about to turn 130,000km as well and had been smoking before the manifold has been cleaned and the EGR disabled. I have a box being prepared for shipment to Manila from Europe with parts for my other vehicles (as MB parts can be over double as much in Manila as it is in Europe). Do you think it is best to have an inlet manifold in the shipment even if I think I have resolved the black smoke? With the EGR now disabled, I surmise that the lifespan of the manifold will be extended - but for how long?

When you had your manifold cleaned, you should have checked the condition of the swirl flaps and the seals on the swivel points. If they were good, and no oil leaks were evident, then there is no real reason to change the manifold. Now that the gunk will no longer build up, the manifold can remain just about maintenance free. Swirl flaps will move freely and seals should remain good. The oil from the PCV system, without the EGR pollutants, will only do positives with regard to lubricating the seals.

Does anyone have the specified torque for the manifold to head bolts? My WIS does not seem to have the manifold change documents.
