IF I was to buy a CL from lets say 2000 onwards would I be mad to go for the CL55 or just stick with the 500, I see little price difference between them at the age and mileage.

If price isn't the issue I see little point of going for the 500. For a start the fiddy five looks better. And as Peter Wheeler said , 'too much power is never enough'

The 2 things I'd check would be costs of insurance and cost of parts. I have no idea whether prices double as soon as the letters AMG are stamped on something but it wouldn't surprise me. If not then the only other question is how hard have 55s been driven on average compared to 500s.
Assuming all is well, according to many you only live once so you may as well enjoy it.

How the AMG has been treated is one thing to consider, parts I would assume would be mega bucks compaired to 500, I hear the AMG engines tend to go bang!!!!

The early 55's were NA so not a huge amount of difference. The later Kompressor cars are something different altogether.

No - just the same engine that was in the W210 E55. They are still very nice cars - and quite rare.

Seems to be quite a few for sale, thing Ive noticed though is most CL's for sale seem to have a mileage 50-60k on the clocks.
How can I verify the mileage, Ive seen these mileage correction services advertised etc and I would assume most traders use them!!!!!

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
With the electronic MOT's the chances are getting less and less, OK if someone was doing a high anual mileage, then it would have to be clocked just before each MOT

Yes but at the moment its still possible to make 50k disapear !!!! I can buy the software and cables that connect my laptop to a car so I can change the mileage all for £30. Not that I would.

I wouldn't be too concerned at the low mileages. Perform the usual checks and cross refer the service history with the dealers. Most of these very high end cars are not 'sole' transport for the owners, and it has probably driven from the house to the BR station if it is the only car. I was at TP last year and there was an SL55 in red with 3 k on the clock for sale. The owner changes it every 3 years even with this low mileage.
