I have a 2005 CL500 - when on a small hill and the car is in the "D" position and I lift my foot off the brake pedal the car rolls backwards. I neve come accross this with any other atuo gearbox.

Is there a solution, can you help me?

thank you for the welcome and information, I'd appreciate any technical infomration on this as no other car I've driven behaves like this (even newer one with the 7 speed gearbox) and M-Benz says it a characteristic for this vehicle.

This is partly a weight issue as your car weighs 1810kg, What you could do is when the car goes in for service, you could ask them to increase the idle by say 25 RPM as this can be enough to stop the car from rolling back in S, but as earlier it will not in W,,I run the SL500 and my Sprag clutch does not work when the engine is cold, but is fine when warm.

Try playing with the throttle on a hill and see at what RPM will hold the car

have you come accross anything of this nature before - the last CL I had was very different, it really concerns me.

Yes it is a some do and some do not,,as above its down to the idle speed, just a difference of 25 rpm more, do see how much more RPMs are needed to hold the car.

All this is, is the fact that the torque converter cannot put out enough torque to hold the car on a hill. If you find the RPM where the car just holds, if this is within reason and still OK for an idle speed setting, you can have the idle speed increased to this point.

My car is like yours and rolls back in S, but not in W. there is nothing to be worried about and so simple to fix, there are no standards set for this and it is not part of any test or set up. It just happens to be a side effect
