Hi all.

I had a bit if a mishap this evening.

I had to leave the house in a hurry and forgot to unplug the trickle charger from the boot of my car in my panic to get out. As I went to pull off of the driveway the mains cable going into the boot was obviously pulled back as I tried to drive away.

Thankfully I realised just in time to stop before any major damage had been caused, however to my horror I’ve managed to crack the bottom leading edge of the boot lid, where the edge of the lid meets the top of the bumper by a good couple inches at a 45 degree angle.

My question is, is this repairable or given that the boot lid is composite is it finished?

My car is my pride and joy and I’m mortified at what I’ve done.

If anybody has a brilliant silver boot lid in good condition knocking about, I’d be very interested.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks and kindest regards.

I think a trip to the local panelbeater or a good panelbeater to have them check this out for you and get a few quotes. I think the boot lid is alloy and not too many people know how to repair alloy.
I did similar when I rode off on my motorbike with the disc lock still attached :(

Bodyshops have some incredible adhesives these days that can repair composite parts, but given it’s on an edge it’ll be vulnerable to it happening again. Take it for a professional opinion is my advice.

Thanks for your reply.

As I understand it the boot lid is made from dual bonded fibreglass and not metal.

Having looked at it properly this afternoon its just the outside lip thats cracked, the inner is absolutely fine so it may not be as serious as I thought and a relatively easy repair.

Bah that's a kick in the teeth!

As above, I'd get an opinion from a body shop. A replacement panel will still need to be colour matched really, even if its the same colour, so its going to need paint either way.

If you do get the boot painted, as them to be very careful with the boot mounted brake lamp. Its £350 from MB, and the lense (easily broken) is not available separately.

I feel your pain.
With panels being a mix of fibreglass and aluminium things are a little more complicated.
The Boot mounted brake light removal requires removal of the boot lid trim, from what I remember, to get to the fixings - its a common point of leakage into the boot lid and down into the lock as well, so remember to reseal when replacing.
