Cl500 2000 215
Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help me. I have a 2000 Cl500 W215. On friday i got a puncture in the near side front tyre. Went to change the tyre and it appears that a bolt from the suspension control arm has dug into the tyre and cut through the entire tyre as it has been rotating, completely shredding it in the process.
With the spare tyre now on i can barely get my finger between the top of the tyre and the bolt connected to the control arm (probably twice as big a gap on the offside) and am worried that if the car is driven it will destroy the new tyre.

an advisory on the last mot said suspension arm has slight play in pin/bush nearside front lower - driven about 1000 miles since mot

Is this the problem? or could it be something to do with the abc? the car raises and lowers with the ride height button although the nearside front will sag if not driven for a couple of days it lifts when put into gear.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as i don't have that much knowledge and have only had the car 6 months and now am currently car less as scared to drive it currently!

Thanks in advance
Adam

Something has broken. The control arm bolts go nowhere near the tyres.

It's nothing to do with the ABC either. I'm struggling to think of your nearest Indy.

You must be meaning an upper control arm?
A lower one (LCA) can't do that... unless it was that worn that it imparted extra extreme neg. camber.
Or your tyre was too wide it hit the top arm?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply's, i cant see anything obviously broken but will take the wheel back off to have a better look. i have added a photo of how it looks with the spare fitted in case my description was confusing

Is there anything specific to look for regards a broken part?

Sorry for all the questions i dont have much knowledge so am really grateful for any help, trying not to have a big repair bill!

Cheers
Adam

if that picture is normal, and the thread on the ball joint sits above the tyre (if that's what I'm seeing ???)

are you running stock wheels and tyre sizes ?

That level of clearance looks plenty big enough it wouldn't touch a tyre that isn't moving in ways it shouldn't (as in failing anyway, dramatically wrong for the wheel, wrong inflation, exceptionally high speed and or some other component failing

Hi Botus

Thanks for your reply im starting to fell a bit more confident.

The wheels/tyres we are running at the front are 245/45/18 on Mercedes alloys, we were only travelling about 40/45 mph when the issue occurred and the tyre was possibly slightly under inflated if anything.

So if when i get the wheel off and there is nothing broken it might possibly just have been the tyre that failed? I am tempted to get it replaced and give it a gentle test drive...

No, no, no...get it checked. If the tyre is under inflated that means it will bulge where it contacts the road...not at the top. There is clearly something very very wrong.

Is that dramatic enough for you?

Try putting it at max font size in red.

Could be a collapsing bearing allowing the wheel to move where it shouldn't.

With regard to that picture, it doesn't look like the thread of that bolt has any 'witness' marks on it.

i.e. Thought it would show black rubber, or have all dirt brushed off by the quickly rotating wheel?
It looks uniformly grey/dusty. ?

Measure from the centre of your wheel to the wheelarch on both sides, is there any difference?

We had the sidewall fail badly on my daughters A Class, it can happen. (Bridgestones)

Could it be that you had a bad puncture and the result was the deflated tyre was free to flex around and make contact with the control arm after the event?
