Thinking of buying this 2009 car , do you think water would have got in?
All I can do is check if the rear parcel shelf is wet.

Any ideas why this would have cracked like this. There is a scratch on the rear bumper about 200mm long looks like another car bumper whacked it lightly, scaped paint through to primer but the plastic bumper is not cracked.

I know they are expensive £990 plus vat trade price ... Plus fitting :(

Rear glasses are laminated, so no water getting in, there is a good chance of getting one secondhand.

Thanks
A good idea but how would I know it was the right one, and where would one get that?

Oh well my best offer was rejected, but it was the highest offer so far.
Discovered the central part of the roof must have been resprayed as their was dust spots in the clear laquer and obviously the same crap sprayer must have been comissioned to do the bonnet as that was a little orange peeley!

So the search goes on unless they accept it later tomorrow.
Hmmm am I asking too much for a genuine 37,000 low mileage serviced early 2009 CL 500
For £15,000 to £15,500?

I think you may be trying to buy one too cheaply.
I think a good one will be a couple of grand more, either that or higher miles.
Happy to be corrected.

Thanks, very useful. And I sort of agree with you. £17,000 but all sorted.

They want min of £15K (I suspect) but it needs a new rear window £1,400 fitted trade price, and £1,200 plus to paint rear bumper re a 250mm scratch, small deep scratch on boot, repaint central part of roof due to bad dust specs in Lacquer of a poor repair , and a small dented scratch on lower rear quater panel, plus relaquer bonnet due to orange peel ( i guess when they badly sorted leading edge stone chips on the bonnet ?? ) , plus one tyre £150, tracking ref very worn shoulder edge to the canvas £60. So Total essential fixing costs are £3,000 to get a "proper car". So that makes it £18,000.
If I was to pay £18,000, I would want a genuine 37K car, meticulous FSH, and no issues to sort.
I would go to £14,000 ... A sort of inconvenience compromise, as I would have to get all this done But apparently thats not enough for the vendor. They initially thought its worth £16,400.
And for me in total that would make it £19,400. ... So far too much.
Maybe I Am wrong but £19,400 buys a really fantastic, all sorted 2009 mabe 2010 version.??

Of course I could be all wrong on this moneywise. As I have only been looking just over a week, and I am in no massive rush as I have a car to drive .. Well 2 to be accurate. But would like to keep the miles low on my other car.

To me these car prices are all within a similar amount, that is cars from 2007 to 09-2010. From the driver point of view they are all the same. It can be the spec that makes a difference along with the mileage and condition.

They have been the same price for some time now, re this car in question if the rear window is cracked and the bonnet and roof need re painting, then something horrible could have happened, the fact that an incomplete cheap job has been done does raise some questions. I would not want it, my own 2007 car is still mint, it has everything possible and about 65k miles. It would sell for £16500.

Good point but the front seemed to be just a crap "local" fix for stone chips as the wings have original paint as does the majority of the bonnet just the leading edge job looks like stone chip removal.

My attraction is the low 37K mileage and the year and the perfect interior and like new leather.

And the roof?

And the rear window?

And the fact it's not been done very well?

I assume something was dropped on the centre part as the outer sections and trim bars are perfect. And then it hit the rear screen.
Not accident damage or the trim bars would be scaped or slimilarly painted.

But a good point and why I wont pay top dallar for it ... Just in case.

It sounds like you've made your mind up already. Be prepared for 35% of the purchase price in further additional hidden repairs... Fixing a CL doesn't come cheap. Trust me on this.

I find it very interesting to study the evolution of the front end styling on essentially the same car, from 215 launch through facelift, to 216 and now to the "common" front end styling that the C, E and S-coupe all share. I'm willing to bet that there is heavy interchangeability of parts at the component level going on in Stuttgart pretty much throughout all 3 model lives to date. Clever little Germans.

The damage could all have happened in a day to someone who wanted to run a car beyond their means or maybe just tight.

I know someone who got an aerosol out on his Rolls many years ago when quoted £300 for paintwork damage.

He was just very very mean and stubborn.

Yes. To me (and looking at what I've found when digging around the gubbins of the engine bay in my CL) that then raises the question of, "What else has the previous owner bodged to stay on his/ her budget?"

I know my CL was bought by its 3rd owner in '07, on 87k miles. The car would've been 7 years old then and at this point MB service history stopped. 35k miles and 8 years later I come along. Now, at 7 years old I'll guess that the £~75k car was sold for ~£15-20k, still a nice car in the then-current shape (although pre-facelift)... and in that 2007- 2015 period, nothing but bodge jobs were carried out. Like the broken sidelight harnesses, I'll have to have the bumper off to repair that now; the previous owner used a combination of really neat soldering and heatshrinking, and twisted wire wrapped in electrician's tape... for the sake of £150 to have bumper removed and refitted.

Not everyone treats cars well and I'd say that the members of this board are very far above the average cut for the way they look after their motors.

Someone who'd had a dodgy repair carried out on a 216... I'd just steer clear of that car. Untold misery lies that way, I can feel it in me waters.
