Well, after picking the car up yesterday a few things came to light:

OCP fix has cured key fob range issue. Sunroof works perfectly on tilt, but only goes back an inch at a time then stops. Then button press, another inch then stops. However it goes forwards just fine.

Engine power seems fine but the transmission seems to "dither" on kickdown, like it doesn't want to transmit power to the wheels.

However that's not the big problem. The big problem is that we were overtaken by our own rear near side wheel at 50mph on the M1 Northbound near J15... The garage that had replaced the rear brakelines and ABC lines, HADNT TIGHTENED THE WHEEL BOLTS UP! The car dropped onto the rear wishbone assy which dragged along the road for 50 yards. Typically, girl child didn't even wake up at this and continued snoring.

We had noticed a slight thump earlier but put it down to the empty fuel can. Then a squishy feeling and I thought, puncture! Oh no.

So when the recovery crew came along, I went to robs wheel bolt from the other 3 wheels to put the spare wheel on, as a low loader had turned up, the bolts I the other rear wheel were only finger tight and rattling loose in the wheel wrench head. I got the crews names and numbers if required as witnesses.

Losses:
1 x18" CL monobloc.
1 X rr disc.
1 X rr backing plate.
1 X wishbone assy.
1 X calliper assy.
1 X brake line.
Brake fluid.

Pictures as attached. The calliper was found in the inside lane by recovery crew.

Currently waiting in Watford Gap services for RAC recovery wagon.

What do you all think I should be looking at from my local garage? He's been emailed already with all details, has called me and agreed to do work immediately to repair, with a independent final inspection by Merc specialist already recommended to me last night on here.

Name of garage withheld until or unless he decides to renege on things. Trying to be fair here.

Wow what a disaster in deed...I would definitely get a recommended MB indy to verify any new work carried out, even better if they can do the repair work authorised by the selling trader...at least then the job should be A1 and you will have confidence in the work...if the selling garage are not capable of tightening up wheel nuts then I would be very hesitant about them touching the car again...

Reference sunroof... sounds like battery has been off so you need to reset the windows and sunroof, lower / raise and hold switch for 3sec....

I am so sorry to read all this. There is a a little more to it all and not just a matter of bolting the parts back.

The car will have to go on a 4 wheel alignment set up, as the rear suspension is quite delicate when exposed to this treatment. It must be done as the car could be out of line.

I am sure that they will fit it all back together, but that must be checked on something like the Hunter 4 wheel set up.

Sorry just to clarify, the (redacted) garage didn't sell the car to me but just did the service & remedial work.

Really sorry to read this. What a horrible start to MB ownership.

I hope the garage who were responsible for the shoddy and dangerous work do the honourable thing and fully compensate you for your trouble.
As in Post # I'd prefer a MB indy to carry out the work for peace of mind.

Yesterday, SWMBO managed to gash the X Trail's wheel arch against the driveway wall when pulling in. 2nd time in 3 months, last time it was both left hand doors and rr wheel arch.

Today, this.

I'm dreading tomorrow!!!

They have a duty to be sure that when the car leaves them it is safe to drive and all work checked. Hopefully they will hold their hands up and say sorry and put it straight again.

Np point in going in deeper at this point in time till you know more and their response.

They've called me, offered to fix all at their cost. I've told them that that's fine, but all work must be verified by MB indie in Bedford. Needless to say I know who will be doing my servicing in future!

Please get the 4 wheel calibration done, this is a must. the car could drive badly if out and cost you a lot of money on tyres

New cars destroying themselves are s bit of a family tradition. The Ford Escort F reg GL whose camshaft belt went at 8000 miles, destroying the engine and stranding us in central France during a motor mechanics strike for 3 weeks springs to mind!!

Thanks all for the support and advice :) :)

in addition do make sure that there has been no damage to any bodywork (bumpers, sill covers etc) caused by the incident. comparatively minor things like those can get quite expensive to put right properly.

There's a paint gash above the wheel arch where (I think) the calliper caught it on its backwards ballistic trajectory towards the tarmac. Aside from that, nothing else evident.

id certainly want it repaired. sounds like you have been lucky, not just from a damage point of view (it couldve been so much worse) BUT from an injury perspective too.
