Hi guys,

my replacement passenger seatbelt reel assy has just arrived (to the wrong address but never mind!) as the existing one is not reeling back in properly.

Can someone please tell me what the procedure is to remove the existing reel and change it for a new one? I understand from previous posts that it's a DIY job.

All tips and comments gratefully received- I'll be doing the job on my Dad's front driveway at the weekend so hopefully no rain!

Thanks,

Craig

I have it waiting, when you get to the item 3 on the seat cover, the only way yo remove it is with a very large screw driver and lever the panel off, place the screwdriver as close as possible to the spire clip. when putting it back, just place it over the end of a small socket, about 9mm and push it on.

The first replacement seat I bought turned out to be the massage type with a great big gash in the leather, so I practiced taking that to pieces- at least as far as I could go. I found the seatbelt unit in the top of the seat back... couldn't figure out how it would come out of the housing or the seat latch trim though!!

Look forwards to your email, thanks very much.

I have just done this on my SL, its quite easy once you work it all out, almost the same as yours with comfort seats.

It's a few posts up.

Wow, how did you get the seat back cover off? I couldn't work it out- had it all unclipped across the back and at the bottom where it slots into the extrusion.

Hi Malcolm,

thank you for the emails! One further question- in the 2nd set of instructions I saw "drill out rivets". Are these solid or pop rivets? And do you know the size at all please?

Regards,

Craig

Ref diaphragm/ spire washers.

I found an easy way to remove this without damaging the plastic side trim.

Using a small electrician's or smaller (slotted type) jeweller's screwdriver, remove the insert cap. You can then just reach the washer's "fingers". Bend one of these towards you a small amount, it will then slide off easily. To refit, just bend that one "finger" back, either with needlenose pliers- be gentle!- or your fingers, and push on with the 9mm socket as Malcolm described. Job jobbed and no damaged trim/ scrap washer.

Good idea :D, sadly on mine it was too low down to get to it:-(

I was able to nab a Johnson Controls freebie multi head mini screwdriver thing about the size of a biro pen, the last time they came into work for a Technology Demo day; by lying across the front seats and working with my arms dangling down it was just the right length to dig into that washer.

Otherwise, yes you might have a problem! Basically a tool no more than 4-5" long overall with a 2mm wide head would fit- at least in the C215.

I found a seatbelt reel from Dronsfields. There is a cross brace that needs to be drilled out and removed to access the reel, and either re-rivetted or bolted back into place to reassemble the seat.
