As your code reader shows live data - are the O2 sensors showing normal reaction and wave form?

Don't know what this would look like tbh.

Once I get up there you can put the car on STAR, at the same time you can plug your diagnostic kit into my SL with the same engine

Is that before or after:

The door
The paint scuffs
Pigging out on herself's cake?

;)

Just a thought.
You mentioned that one of the fault codes was a knock sensor, if so it will retard the ignition, as it is avoiding detonation. This will maybe be the cause of the lack of grunt, as the ECU is being "cautious" .....

Check you are using the CL500 on your i980, not the CL55 mode (the charge cooler code may relate to CL55?)

You should be able to clear fault codes with the i980, do so and see what re-occurs.

It may just be a new knock sensor is required. (It used to be a common fault on Subaru engines, it's a fail safe kind of fault to avoid damaging the engine).

That makes disturbingly a lot of sense.

The i980 treats CL500 and CL55 from 2000-2002 as the same thing. It will clear fault codes, right now all I'm seeing are the knock sensor, intake air and MAF open circuit, and a consistent lighting issue that will be a bumper off job to sort!!! It will likely be next week before I get the chance to play with it again now.

One quick chat with Welwyn Merx later, it does seem odd that the values output by the intake air temperature sensor and MAF sensor are in the plausible range. Could be a harness fault, could be that the powertrain needs to re-learn the new MAF and needs a hard reset. As the bumper has to come off anyway in order to get the sidelights fixed- and headlamp washers, may as well get the plumbing sorted in one go- I'm going to book the car into Phil again as soon as realistically possible.

Fixing this, selling the X Trail, buying the E-wagon, baby due and new kitten at the end of the month. It's all ****** happening now!

Thinking about the knock sensor, this could put the engine in the fully retarded state, usually when so far retarded it can cause the cylinder head to over heat, and one can often smell this after a run. I do not know what the range is of this sensor.

Drop in for a coffee when you get the kitten (before collecting it - otherwise our dogs will go mental!).

I'll try my best, we will probs have a baby in tow at this point!!!

Hmm haven't noticed a smell, as for being fully retarded... NEVER go full retard. (Sorry, Tropic Thunder reference)

Well chaps, just to update.

After finding a dead, dessicated colony of mice inside the valley of the engine between cylinder banks, Phil has replaced both anti-knock sensors. Now discovered a rather corroded engine ECU connector, that has been replaced and the others cleaned up.

I now tremble in dread at the open wallet surgery I am about to undergo, but hopefully- he says!- that will be the Beast sorted out. Fingers crossed!

It will only be a once off job when done Craig, that was a very rare fault.
