Phoned Mercedes Wakefield this morning as its my day off. They say that the newer chrome keys should be able to be programmed to the the car for keyless go without the need for a seperate card. But they cant do it retrospectively. So I need to order another new key from Germany for £215. The dealership will then programme it to the car. They say that in the past dealerships have ordered new keys for cars without realising the car has keyless go/entry so dont bother to prog them in, but then they cant do it afterwards which seems a bit droll. My worry is I will pay for the key and it still wont work because of some other prob with the car, so perhaps this time I will accept defeat and accept things as they are. BooHoo

Can they not just order the card and program this?

Your key with one battery will be a keyless go card, they can just plug the car into STAR leave the key in the car and after a few minutes its all done, I have done this a few times on my own STAR

Ah right TV well that makes sense other wise I would end up with three keys. If its just a case of plugging the car into star, with key in car. I could even do it through a specialist with star equipment and not bother with the main dealers then

After further research I have now found out that some cars dont have cards but smart keys. I think mine is the latter. There are two keys, both are chrome and black. Each one has a small red light which pulses when you press one of the three functions. Nothing happens when you press the pad on the car handle with the keys in range, so entry has to be made by pressing the unlock button on the fob. Once in the car I have tried the keyless go feature by pressing the shifter button, pressing the footbrake first and a message comes up saying chip card not recognised. If I assume that the keys are indeed smart keys then the problem might be on the car as neither keyless go or entry are working. Q Is there a transmitter box under the rear seat that needs re setting ? or is it something to do with putting the key into the ignition and pressing one of the fob buttons to reset it that way ? or is it a case of taking the car for star diagnosis ?

With keyless on a cl you don't press the button to unlock the doors but pull the door handle gently. The black button is for locking. Have you tried replacing the batteries in your keys as a clear signal needs to be able to be read by the car before keyless start will work?
