Not sure about your model, but if has keyless entry/go, then I understand they all have only one battery.

Sorry all keys have 2 batteries as the run on 6 volt, this includes keyless go cards, but they can use the thinner 2016 batteries

Must disagree Malcolm - mine was playing up a few weeks ago - changed the battery in both keys - only one per

Then please read page 351 of the handbook 2 x 2025 to quote from the book, "you will need 2 3volt CR2025 round cell Panasonic or Varta cells"

I have had over 50 here for repair, I can recall that you had locking problems, this could explain it

battery

So do i need 2 thinner batteries to make the key work properly as i have been having problems with the vehicle not recognising the key and only being able to lock and unlock from a short distance away?

Malcolm - your knowledge of keys is not in dispute

On the other hand, I am not daft.

I parted with the car (therefore the handbook) yesterday morning.

The attached took some finding - note reference to the singular battery. There is not enough physical space to hold two and there is no other key in the fob

Well I have never seen a key that only uses 1 battery, and as before I have repaired more than 50, the quote in my above post was from the SL230 handbook that applies to the 350,500 55 and 600

All keys from 1998 till at least 2008 use 2 batteries I quoted from the 07-2003 handbook, this includes the plastic and chrome types, this is the handbook that came with your car, do I have to photocopy it, and I have been repairing them for 5 years. the only key that uses 1 x 6 volt is the one for the remote heater.

A 2003 SL 230 requires 2 x CR2025 batteries, I have never in my life seen one that uses one, they are only 3 volt and the range would be terrible

Remember the manual will be a translation from German. As Malcolm says 2 3volt batteries in series will yield 6 volts= correct operating voltage-------- however I guess its possible there's a design margin of error to account for diminishing battery voltage in the design. Chances are the unit may function with one- very good single battery ---- consequence would be reduced range and possible endurance???

It does say "Batteries" plural in the narrative?

See post #16

Lets leave that on out for the time being as the first chrome key had a very short life and it was soon replaced with one that used 2, and I have only ever seen 1 of those years ago
