CL600 tyres

Hi All,

What tyres, size and make, should a CL600 with 18" AMG wheels be wearing?

It currently has:
265/40ZR18 on the back and 235/35ZR18 on the front.

Not sure why the sidewalls heights are different...should they be?

fronts should be 245 x 45 x 18, that is with 8.5j wheels, and rear 265 x 40 x 18 and for 9j wheels

The sidewall height is got from the width x the height then %

so 245 x 45 = 110 mm height and the 255 x 40 =106mm

The sidewall heights are different as they are measured as a percentage of the tyre width, but more importantly, the difference in circumference between your 235/35X18 and what Malcolm says you should have, 245/45X18, is over 9%.
Not recommended.

Go kwikfits website input your reg number and it will tell you, the correct tyre for your wheels, obviously if they have been changed to a larger size then this won't help only for original fitment

Only when the op measures the width of the wheels will we know for sure, the correct size could be on the inside of the fuel filler cap.

The CL600 left the factory with 245-45-18 and 265-40-18

Thanks for the all the posts so far.

Guy, I'm afraid Kwickfit can't find the car on their site!

I've just checked and the alloys are 8JJ front and 9JJ rear.

My S320 has that size, I think that the AMG alloys came with 245 45 18 at the front and 275 40 18 at the rear.

Thanks very much.

I'm still struggling to work out, using the numbers, what tyre size I should have. I realise you've given me this as a straight answer, but I like to try and use my brain a little.. :)

OK, think I'm getting it.

Work out the height of the original tyres and try to match the new alloys as closely as possible to that...

Originals, according to that link:
Front:
18x8 245/45 - 110mm height
Rear:
18x9 265/40 - 106mm height

Currently has:
Front:
18x8 235/35 - 82mm
Rear:
18x9 265/40 - 106mm

So..the rears are correct, the front needs a larger size...as you say 245x45.

What make/model of tyre would you prescribe?

I still have the original 18" AMG alloys supplied with my previous car by MB (i.e. 2005 E55). The spec is as follows:

Rear: 265/35R/18
Front: 245/45R/18

I have however always wondered what the correct tyre pressure should be based on no more than two people in the car. I use 32 psi front and 35 psi rear.

Any leading make, the tyres must have a load index of 98 for that car.

I have just bought 4 x 19" Pirrelli's from quikfit and the cheapest by a long way. You just get the online price and take it to any branch and they match it

The pressure stays the same irrespective of the tyre size

I wondered when this question was going to be asked again. ;)

As always I disagree with Malcolm on this subject, and just looking through the new Mercedes C class Haynes manual they offer the following advice..............

"The recommended tyre pressures for each vehicle are given on a sticker attached to the fuel filler flap. The pressures given are for the original equipment tyres - the recommended pressures may vary if any other make or type of tyre is fitted; check with the tyre manufacturer or supplier for the latest recommendations."

The usual can of worms has now been opened when tyre pressures are mentioned. :D

Yes and I was waiting too :D

One thing for sure is that you cannot use less pressure as this is a weight issue, and that cannot be changed, with larger wheels and a lower profile one often has to run at the fully loaded figures to avoid rim damage

That is the clever bit. It is perhaps understandable if drivers refer merely to the information on the flap, especially if they either specified different tyre dimensions from new, or if they bought a car which already had aftermarket modifications. It's not "rocket science", but folks do need to think of it and act accordingly.

To Malcolm's point, damaged rims is a hard way to learn.
