Hello, this is my first post. I've driven Mercedes for the last 40 years - vast majority of which have been E class 200, 220 D. My current car is an E220, it is seven years old and I'm looking at changing it. I no longer do the mileage I used to now that I'm retired hence I can't really justify having another E class so I have seriously been looking at the CLA 220 d AMG Line Executive Coupé. I will be test driving one next week, and as you can imagine I have read about as much as I can find on Google, but then realised the best people to ask is this forum. I would really welcome anyone's experience of the new CLA 220 d AMG Line Executive Coupé. I really carry passengers apart from my husband in the front seat and do very low mileage, but I do longer runs up to 500 mile round-trip occasionally, so want something that is comfortable and reliable and looks fabulous. Help!!

Hello and welcome,

Firstly I’d change “your Mercedes” in your profile as it looks very much like a password…

I would say if you’re not doing the miles don’t buy a euro 6 diesel.

I’d also say why can’t you have an E-Class once you’ve retired? If you can’t have comfort now when can you? (Nothing wrong with a CLA, I’d not pick one over an E Class coupe though) - Give it a good test drive and see if it’s for you, you might also want to be higher for easier access (Judging by the number of Stupid Utility Vehicles on the road someone obviously likes them…) So don’t discount a GLC

@Ron240 has a CLA35 and can advise on his

Hello and welcome. The CLA is a nice looking car but I wouldn’t go near a diesel doing “very low mileage”. All the emission gubbings don’t like short journeys - there should be plenty of petrol ones around for this model.

Sold - 2021 CLA 35 Premium.
I can only echo what others have said and advise against buying the diesel model.
You could go down to the CLA 200 with a 1.3 litre 163hp engine which is 1.1 seconds slower 0-62mph, and in the same trim spec this car is £2650 cheaper.
Or you could choose the CLA 250e which is also a 1.3 litre but with the addition of an electric motor. This car is very slightly quicker accelerating compared with the 220d but it is not available in your chosen trim spec and you would need to move up to Premium which is £2845 more expensive, but critically this moves it into the higher additonal rate of annual tax so in my view puts it out of the question.
The current model CLA is a very good looking car, particularly in profile and rear 3/4 view where it is very stylish.
It has to be your decision of course, but from what you have said your usage does not justify buying a diesel.

P.S. I have made the assumption that you are buying new or nearly new, but if not a CLA 250 (2 litre 224hp) would be my choice. It was my first Mercedes after buying a new Premium Plus in June 2020.
This car was discontinued in early 2022 and replaced with the 250e.

Tell the salesperson what your average weekly / monthly mileage and trip profile will be.

If it's low, short journeys, he (or she) should direct you away from a modern diesel.
And if they do not to try and shift a car other people are avoiding, keep a note of their name so if the (usually proven right) doom stories play out, you may have some recourse.

In modern day driving, the smaller engined car in a refined model such as the CLA is pretty much perfect (unless you look at a car that can have more cylinders in it)

Let us know how you get on
