What age does a car have to be before gaining "classic" status?

Best,

I think it's not so much age-related, as long as it's not a current model, but more the case of accepting limitations on mileage, use etc.

Jim.

Don't take this wrong but....

Please don't cross post!

This plays havoc with the read/unread indicators when the same question is posted in two Forums.

I like many others read all forums (work can be boring!) so a question posted in either forum will be answered!

This will save you and others time!! :)

Most insurers would grant classic insurance to vehicles 10 years and older........and of certain makes of which MB is one of them. Hope this helps.

I was sure it was 20 years... It may depend on the insurer. Also, usually mileage is restricted to under 6000 mpa (but again this may depend on the insurer).

Apologies, I'll stop doing it, force of habit from being on so many motorcycle mailing lists with cross interests...... :)

So you motorcycle too!
Me too when my alternator works (engine out job on an ST1100   )

Please accept my apologies too, felt a bit of a heel doing it so publicly!

You can get 'Classic' insurance for your car, similiar age to mine and the previous owner told me he got classic insurance.

Downsides are (or so I am told) only one driver and limited mileage!

Bikes

Yes, I bike! I currently ride a CCM supermoto with tuned Rotax, Beringer race brake and unsociable race can..... Sorry Mike B! :D

Previous to that the bikes were, most recent at the top of the list:

TL1000S
T509 Triumph Speed Triple
Z1170J2

And a whole procession of snotters including BMW R80, GS1000, XS1100, XJ650, GS850, RD400, RD200........

No bother about the dressing down, you were quite correct and now everyone knows.

Norton Insurance (0121 246 5050) do agreed value policies for cars 10yrs plus. Can be limited or unlimited mileage. I have had my classics with them for years, But be careful , as you do not necessarily maintain your full entitlement to no claims bonus when switching back to conventional insurance.

You'll find most classic policys are second vehicle only policys and for social and domestic purposes only. Meaning you have to have another vehicle insured as your main vehicle and the 'classic' can't be used to travel to and from a place of work.
