I'm sure this has been done to death but I'm not a fan of the search option.

Quick responses are fine, no need for too much detail if it's been thrashed already. I've tried Cillit Bang and it's ok but I'm wondering whether there's a better way.

Does a power cleaner make that much difference to brake dust that's stuck fast?

Cheers.

If you read what most wheel cleaners contain you would never use them.. I never have the problem as I use EBC brake pads

I use TFR (Traffic Film Remover) to great effect.

If you keep using these type of products you will damage the powder coating that protects the alloy.

The easy way to keep the wheels clean once they are clean is to wax them and then wash them on a regular basis. Brake dust eats into the powder coat and causes all sorts of problems. To remove dirt and grime try using a cutting compound like Farecla and then a good coat of wax. If you can't be fussed about all that palaver then you could use Wonder Wheels to remove the grime, but be warned....if there is any chips or breaks in the powder coat the Wonder Wheels could make more of a mess than you bargain for.

Have had no problems since using it over a year ago, and the vehicle gets cleaned every week

Personally I use wonder wheels to do the 'initial' clean removing all the black specks from the brakes etc. Then give them some rim wax and keep ontop of them with regular washing and monthly waxing. I wouldn't recomment using wonder wheels very often though as it will not do your wheels much good. The wax I use on the wheels is 'Mer Wheel Wax' which is fairly good, I should imagine there are better though.

I use tfr as said above diluted 50/50 in a squirty bottle, just a few squirts and a go with the sponge as good as new well chipped peeling new!

I have also tried the oven cleaner on badly baked on brake dust and it did a fine job with no problems.

Tfr is easy to use doddle to remove and for me free.

I have a couple of gallons of alloy wheel cleaner in my garage and still use the tfr out of preference.

Oven cleaner has got to be crueler than tfr surely?
