hi

my 107 has grime/gunk around where the spark plugs are - i would like to clean all this area up before i remove the old plugs and fit new ones.

any advice on how to do this - i dont want to damage anything.

also whats generally the cause of the gunk here? worn components or just build up over time?

thanks

derek

try this for a bodgit

get an old plug, hacksaw the insulator assembly off, making sure you dont create a hole where crud can get by. Also cut some threads diagonally into the plug thread with the hacksaw. Remove your current plug, fit the modified one, use a suitable wire brush attachment on a flexi-shaft from your electric drill to clean the recess, hoover it out, blow it out, and then remove your modified plug, which should have cleaned up your head threads as well in the process.

Should I patent this?

thanks - sounds a good idea. i'll give that a go - i'm planning to give the 107 a quick service before i return it to the road. i plan to replace the spark plugs, clean the general area, adjust the timing, change the oil and filters.

another common trick, if your cleaning crud away so it wont drop down the plug holes when you remove the plugs is simply to wear a pair of goggles to protect your eyes and blast the crud out with a high pressure air jet. mechanics do it all the time.

You've seen a mechanic wearing goggles .. a rare sight indeed.. its normally point the blowgun look the other way and blast..

You could try a pressure washer, wet the area to clean with GUNK and let rip.
The plugs will need drying afterwards though.

i meant the air line bit, not the goggles bit! the goggles part was put in for the safety of others!:shock:

id steer clear of that if at all possible. water is required to rinse gunk away. so many electronics under the bonnet, IMO water is the last thing you want under there

i think i'll scrape off as much as possible with my fingers, then apply the gunk degreaser and then finally try the air trick. at the moment i'm not cleaning the engine bay (will do this at some point) - i'm just cleaning up that general area as i want to get the engine running nice and give it a service before i return it to the road. thanks
