One thing for sure that is never mentioned these day is never use scented soap, as it rots the stiches, this was put out by RR some year ago.

It is often said thats the Neats foot oil or sadle soap is the best as they are both nature products

Neats foot oil is too oily, Ive found swarfega to be the best product for cleaning leather. it also leaves it smooth and soft afterwards but you will need to use leather food afterwards.

Could be, my leather in the Bentley creaks like an old sofa and adds to the character of the car, whereas in a modern MB there is not a peep out of it. Mind you, I was offered Artico man made leather (how?) for the dash on my new S Class at nearly a grand !! What the hell is man made leather anyway?

Had a pro valetter out yesterday to give my 124 coupe a smarten up. Cannot believe the difference inside, mushroom leather and matching carpets have come up like new.

No not one of the dodgy, mucky water cheapies now inhabiting most redundant filling stations, wouldn't use them if my life depended on it.

A local bloke, reliable and recommended.

Will try much harder now to keep the seats and carpets cleaner.

I've had a browse round the 'detailing' site, and they seem to be quite keen on gliptone for leather cleaner and conditioner, fairly cheap off the flea bay as well.

I use Gliptone :) Wonderful stuff, brings the seats up like new and smells fantastic (well like leather actually)..

As jaymanek, never use saddle soap. Great for tack but not suitable for car upholstery.

Knowing your car well and having seen it it does look good inside, so it will have to be gliptone for me from now on,I take it, that it does not make it shine

Yes this has been a good thread, and it has brought out the reminder that the processing ways at the tannery have changed

The old method using celulose based paints did make the leather shine. The new methods are water based dyes that have a mat finish, and gives the seats a better grip when cornering.

This can be seen in all of the photos of the interiors of cars like the 126 where a distinct shine can be seen.

I believe that it is glyptone that make the MB leather care kits, but I might be wrong

Now this may scare the beejasus out of many of you and isn't recommended for a regular process but having had cream leather before (on a Jag' XJ) just wearing clean jeans started to turn it powder blue on the drivers seat.

A very WEAK bleach solution in warm water will bring the seats up clean in a matter of a few wipes. Do not soak the leather and do not allow it to 'pool' in the ruches and/or seams. Clean/feed/moisturise immediately its dry.

I still use the Jaguar supplied cleaning stuff as I got stuff every time I changed the car so have 2-3 bottles left. With my Merc' I got a Starshield cleaning kit so will try that out also now.

If you are going to use soap then use pure soaping agents such as Lux or Dreft not fairy liquid or any detergants, never over wet.
Never ever apply creams before cleaning as this will impregnate the leather with the dirt and dust and ultimately change the colour
Gliptone products are very good indeed, Leather Master also do all sorts of Pigmented and analine leather kits, always best to use the mildest, so if it is a leather cleaner with a nutaral PH and can be used on analine leathers ( this is a leather with no protective coating) then I would think thats OK. Leather Master do a Blue Box Kit, this can be bought on line I think! Most furniture retailers have them in stock but load the price

I have used Autoglym cleaner and it is too severe, takes the colour out, be careful!

With really ingrained dirt use a small nail brush in conjunction with a mild solution of warm water and Lux or Dreft this works well, allow to dry naturally

For worn leather colour loss, I used a pigment colour on my old sierra seats which was water based, thinned with roughly 40% water and applied with a spunge like a wash, wiped off after about 30 seconds leaving the colour in the worn creases and used Leather Master matt clear leather lacquer spray over the top, what a difference.

Thanks for recommendo Whitenemesis, have ordered some of that very stuff, but from another seller who is slightly cheaper.

Now its back in condition i want to feed the leather and keep it nice, may have to try and find a new centre arm rest somewhere, nothing wrong with the main leathers, but the piping has split in two places. Should imagine they are a bit pricey from the stealer, so may have to get recovered, unless someone knows different.

Put 4 new boots on the old girl as well, must be her birthday.

There are good kits on the market to re colour the leather about £25 and its an easy way out, and works well
