Please can anyone shed some light on a fault on my 97 C220D.

After I have braked & when I release the brake pedal, there is a pronounced ?click? apparently coming from the front offside wheel. My first reaction was worn out brake pads which I have replaced today, (they were very worn but not totally knackered) but the clicking remains. Nothing appears to be at fault all parts are present & correct, any  ideas would be appreceiated.

I would imagine it is soemthing to do with the ABS shutting off once you have come to a stop.

Even if the ABS isnt used when coming to a halt, its still switched on and poised ready to be used.

Hi Snake

I know this is or no help to you,but I would also like to the cause', I used to get that on mine 500se,and the same side after braking, just a couple of after I'd bought it.
But I have reciepts for new discs/pads (front),which the previous owner bought just about a two months ago,and I just put mine through an MOT the other day and nothing showed up,but like yourself I'd like to know what it was, especially if/when it comes back.

regards

To Matt

Thanks for the suggestion, I think you could be on the right lines as I have noticed today that I can get the "click" after stopping completely, handbrake on, into neutral & then releasing the footbrake. Therefore it cannot be a "moving" part ie spring, shocker, ball joint etc. It seems to come from the wheel area. The ABS therefore sounds possible/likely/plausible???

I get a slight tapping through my brake pedal whan stopped and when the car is in park with the parking brake on it still happens. Last week when i was looking under the bonnet , i noticed that a pipe also vibrates to the sound of the tap . If the brakes are fine .. quite powerful ... would be interested on the outcome on this post

Snake, judging by what you say, it may also be a sticky caliper. As you know, when pressure is applied on the foorbrake, pistons push out each side of the caliper, and inturn push the pads onto the disc, the noise you are hearing sounds like the piston returning back in to the caliper. Have you tried taking the front wheel off and seeing if a clip is loose or anything, as dont forget, quite a few cars have various metal clips holding the pads in place, the clip may be catching on something. Its always hard to try and picture noises without actually hearing them!

Thanks Matt, all good advice.

Ive gone off the idea of the ABS as it clicks with the ignition off. I dont know so much about a sticking caliper as I have fitted new pads & therefore the caliper is now in a different position, although I appreciate it is still possible. I will take your advice & spend some time on it tomorrow with the wheel off & a helper pumping the brake (more pocket money for my 12 year old!!)
