Climate Control Panel Lights

The push button controls on the right hand side of the fascia panel and the temperature wheel do not illuminate on my 1995 E320.
I have taken the entire assembly out and can see the bulb but can't access it. My Mercedes dealers are trying to tell me that I have to buy an entire unit for the sake of a 90p bulb. Does anyone know any different?

by definition, if you can remove it to change the whole unit, you should then be able to get to the bulb. W210 or W124?

It is a W124 model. The bulb concerned is just visible behind a circuit board which is fixed in place. The person at the Mercedes dealer suggested the bulb might be soldered in place but I can't verify this. It is certainly not shown as a separate item on the MB parts computer.
