Do check for any rust on the rear arches, its a good engine in that model

If you can find one, go for the 320. It uses as much fuel as the 240 and is much quicker.

Average MPG on these is about 27 so expect 20-22 around town and up to 35 on a run.

As an ex E240 owner I'd second that.
Wonderfully smoooth engine but you have to work it to get anything out of it. (Then as a Mazda owner you may be used to that ;-) ) It will cruise brilliantly but lacks the low down torque for quick, non kickdown, pick up. The 320 has the spare power you need and will return very similar mpg as it's not working as hard.
Plug change is at 60k (£200 ish), gearbox oil similar and in my experience, the 240 needs new plug leads (£240 from a dealer!!! - cheaper elsewhere) every 3 years or the idle gets lumpy.
Things to check aside from rust are normal stuff - history and that everything works properly.
