Morning. I have a 03 plate W209 CLK 270 CDI which until 2 weeks ago has presented no problems. When the temperature dipped 2 weeks ago it did not like starting. I did the usual, turn it on and off a few times to warm up the glow plugs and after 5 or 6 attempts it fired up. When you drive the car there are no obvious problems and once warm it starts no problem. I had the glow plugs changed and fuel filter last week. This morning the temperature dropped again and the car didn't like starting. it seems to have to be icy and frosty for this to happen. The garage that changed the glow plugs said that the pipes to the turbo are leaking would this have any relation to the cold start problem?

No it wouldnt, i suspect you have a injector leaking by or a airleak from one of the fuel line seals, letting air into the system, was the glow plugs merc ones or cheapies???

Hello, and welcome,, I cant see that the turbo will affect cold starting,,any air in the system after the filter replacement will,,are there any bubbles in the pipes around the filter

I see that SAM has said the same thing, more or less

Hi, i think the parts were from GSF, the work carried out was by a german car specialist but not a merc dealer.

I think you have to have a look at the clear fuel lines on a cold start, see if theres any bubbles in there, if not a injector leak off test would be my next step!

Just had exact same problem with mine. For some reason cold mornings and air in the fuel lines don't mix. I went to a German specialist also and spent £700 on injectors only for another injector to fail a week later (that I noticed while changing the air lines myself). Was your glow plug light staying on previously?

Had a good look round the fuel pipes yesterday and found that the three pipes located around the injector pump had all gone brittle. I changed an o ring in one of the connectors that seemed to have fuel leaking from it, touch wood it started ok this morning. I am going to change the whole set tomorrow and hope thats the end of it.

Clk 270 Cdi

I've just had exactly the same issue with my car. It had issues starting up over the last couple of weeks. The engine would tick over but not start, However I could push start it everytime. I also have a Clk 270 CDI. I took it to Mercedes in Romford who have just smacked me with bill for £400!:mad: The issue was a failure in the number 3 injector which was replaced.
I've now just noticed this morning that the glow plug light is staying on longer than usual? Do you think there is a link anyone?

Hi

have had similar problem, had new battery replaced two weeks ago due to cold starting problem. But it has happened again on very cold morning turns over but will not start. Had new glow plugs 18 months ago preglow comes on on starting and goes out as it should on dashboard. Once started and warmed up car absolutely fine running and starting. Very odd could this be a related problem.

we have exactly the same starting problem with our `03 270CDi, also stinks of diesel at the front of the engine.

2 clear looking pipes at the front under the engine cover were wet too, dunno what the pipes are tho, they are clear in colour.

Help please!!!!:(

c&jclk, i suggest you need the o-rings changing on these pipes. a very common fault, and a common cause of starting problems.

I just had a service last Monday. Also had the same symptoms, repaced the fuel filter and the o rings, problem solved. A cheap fix.

CLK 270 CDI (Cold start problem)

Hi guys!
I bought my car in 2005. Just a couple of weeks ago, I started having this strange problem. This year it has been colder than the others (since 2005).
I my self experienced every morning the following:
- turn the key (glow plug light comes on and then goes off);
- start the engine (it starts up and then just shuts down);
- as normal, i try a second try (but without success);
- third try, fourth try, fift try, six try (everytime hitting the accelerator) and them suddently its starts working, (but i have to keep my foot on the gas);
- after working for some while it doesn't give me any more trouble.

- This Monday I took it to the official Mercedes garage as I normaly do!
- After explaning the problem, the chief mechanic told me it could probably be airleak from one of the fuel line seals letting air into the system.
- Because they have quite a lot of work, they can only fix the problem on Thursday. So I just have to wait and hope its not anything else.

I'll give you the news on Friday.

i think mercedes are correct, this is a common problem, and not too expensive to fix. the symptoms you describe match it perfectly (ie - worse on first start after standing, worse when cold, starts initially then needs lots of cranking to re-start)

CLK 270 CDI (Cold start problem)

Hi everyone,

first let me tank you all, this forum is great and works with all your effort to help others. :D
- The Mercedes garage phone me and told me that they replaced the "O rings" and apparently everything seems ok :), but they want to let the car rest overnight and will give it a cold start tomorrow morning to check that the problem is solved.
- Tomorrow (Friday) I hope to give further news about this issue.

bye
