Hi Folks,

This problem has just emerged today, in my 2003 CLK. The engine completely shuts down when i accellerate above around 2700 rpm. Car restarts and runs fine below this RPM. Any ideas or suggestions?

My first thought was CPS, but that wouldnt cut at that rpm range everytime, going to have to think about that, faults codes would nail it!

Thanks for getting back so quick, do you think it's ok to continue to drive? My gut suggests that this is some sort of protection mode, that shuts down engine to prevent further damage??? that or some sort of sensor failure/fault?? Any other pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated.

Just checked on EPC and its the same CPS which is fitted to the ml270, that packs up all the time, could be just a crank sensor!

Cheers for the research and feedback, car is under private warranty so will get it booked in and suggest they check out the crank sensor.

Thanks again.

Id say its a fuel problem, start with fuel filter, but fault codes need to be read.If youve got warranty id just take it in and not worry, aslong as its covered. Had a fuel rail causing this problem last week.

Up-date of the Cut Out over 2700 revs

I think i have got it sorted. Brought car to merc and for £100 they ran the diagnostics, they reported that they cleared two diagnostic error reports, but that no particular fault with the cut out above 27000 revs was found.

The car has been running perfectly ever since... touch wood. The instruction from merc was for me to drive the car and to report any further problems... 3 days and 150 miles later and no further issues - happy days!

So the advice of taking it to merc was sound. Thanks to television and to others.

Cheers
:)

Hi All,
Looks like my initail joy was to be short lived. Problem has once again emerged. Has been back to erc, they replaced two injectors claiming that they were the source of the problem. However on way home after 'repair??? exactly the same problem emerged again. Car going back again to merc tomorrow. Will let you know how this plays out.

Sadly once the dealer plays the game of swapping injectors it means that they have not got a clue about what is wrong with it, and it will end up very expensive with no redress on the parts fitted that you did not need

Hi Malcolm, I figured as much, i spoke to them today along this vein and passed on the ideas that you folks had. Mentioned the CPS, and asked them to look at that. Any suggestions on how i should deal with this, the diagnostics obviously is failing to pick up the problem, nightmare!

if its dropping to safe mode, an error must be logged.
If in doubt, I'd change the MAF. Its the most common thing.
The other thing I'd do is avoid the dealer and take it to a specialist.
If they're no closer, one technique i've had success with in the past is to hand the car to the mechanic (can't do this with a dealer) and tell him to use the car as his own for a few days. Kind of an extended road test. When it plays up in their hands they can normally diagnose it quite quickly.

It does sound like a fuel pressure fault, maybe they replaced the wrong injectors????

Without looking at it myself it could be numerous things, keep us posted

Hi All,

Well the good news is the issue has been resolved and the car is running absolutely fine, the mechanic from merc took the car home with him for a couple of nights to test it properly. The not so good news is, i'm not exactly sure what the problem was, and i'm not convinced merc are either. They replaced two injectors, this didnt sort the problem, when i returned it the explanation they have given me this time was that there was a 'spurious' fuel filter fitted and that this was clogged, once they replaced it, car has worked fine since. They addmitted that this was the first thing they should have looked at and there was no charge for the second visit to merc. Is this a likley source of the problem? I had the car serviced in April air, oil and fuel filters were all replaced then? As long as it continues to run well i'll be happy, merc cut me deal to limit my liability with my private warranty company. Total bill was £599 (this included a heater plug which i needed anyway) - of which circa £100 was labour (£40 of which warranty co. will cover, the rest was parts all covered by warranty. Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Hopefully i'm not back here in two months with another chapter in the saga! Fingers crossed...

Best

ML270cdi cut out over 2600rpm

Drove my ML 270cdi overland to Kiev no problems two months ago, however last week it started to cut out over 2600 rpm in Auto and continues to do so in that mode but I can nurse it up to 120km as long as I dont accelerate and demand over 2500 on the engine, yet in manual it will go through the gears no problem in excess of 2600 rpm provided you change before it goes in to auto mode. The car is in MB in Kiev and they have replaced Air Flow Meter and Fuel Regulator but they are stumped. The problem is still there but the EPC is not retaining or displaying the fault it is a 51 plate 270cdi. reading this thread there seems to be no difinitive answer is all lost ??

Problem identified by Merc in Kiev...swarf in fuel line ...they want 7500 euros to replace all of fuel system including tank, rails, injectors, pumps etc (parts only) + labour 30stg per hour ...they reckon high pressure pump is damaged..they have cleared the swarf allegedly but problem remains ..so I will bring back new HP Pump from England and have it fitted ...if it flys it flys... if it dies it dies..thank you for your assistance..I will keep you informed..

Hi All, not exactly two months, but almost two years later same problem emerged again, this time i took it to my local mechanic, he gave me a fuel wash which helped for a while, but issue returned again when car reached driving temperature. Having tried most things before and having recently replaced the fuel filter and based on previous experience from this forum i suggested we try a new Air Flow Meter. So far so good, have done 250 miles and all seems well... famous last words...
