Hi, I'm new to the forum and am seeking some advice. Last Sunday after filling the car up at a petrol station I haven't used before I drove home about 10 miles stopping the car a couple of times no problems. A couple of hours later I went to garage the car and it woundn't start, the engine turned over but it didn't fire up. I tried about four or five times and nothing. I left it about 10 mins and tried again and it started 2nd time but I noticed the Engine diagniostic indicator lamp stayed on. I took it for a short run parked up stopped the engine and it fired up straight away again the fault light stayed on. Next morning the car started straight way with the fault light on I switced off and started it up again no problem and this time the fault light didn't stay on. Later in the day(yesterday) when I wen't back to the car It wouldn't fire up again asnd it still won't start. I'm in the process of trying to get someone out to it. One other problem I've got is that I'm scared that I'm running the battery V low and I do not have the manual for the Radio/CD hence no code. Can you tell me if it's safe to charge the battery up without removing it from the car ?
Thanks

i woudl change the battery and not charge as i know this can cause problems whilst on the car.
codes you should be able to get from a dealer, take in your log book etc if its the same from mmanf they will have, usually as i found my stero was changed but code was written on stereo not very clever if it was stolen but it saved my behind...
the battery can cause so many faults on the car due to lack of voltage, i would replace with new battery and take from there.

Thanks for That Raj, I'll leave it till the Mechanic has been out to the car tomorrow and I'll hopefully then have an idea what the problem is.

A 2001 car should not need coding by rights, though the odd one got through that needs it.

Thanks to all who posted a reply, and I definately didn't put deisel in by mistake, I kept my fuel receipt because I'd filled up at Morrisons for the first time ever and it did seem to be a coincidence in the light of the recent contamination problems. Anyhow the mechanic has just been to the car and the diagnostic report is pointing to the crankshaft sensor(I think that's what he said). But I was a little wary because he didn't seem to know exactly where this sensor was located anyhow he did unplug a sensor which he thought was the right one and ran the start up sequence again and it still threw up only the crankshaft sensor as being the problem so he pushed it back in and re ran the report just to see if it had come loose but still no joy. So he's gone off to price a new one up and find out if they have any in stock.
I hope it's not goping to cost a fortune. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again.

The crankshaft sensor is common for this fault of intermittent stating.
Cost around £80 and fairly easy to change.

Just an update to those who posted a reply. It was the crankshaft sensor, eventually got a new one fitted after Merc at Warrington initially sent the wrong part. The bad news was the £180 bill to fix it, and unbelievably Merc also charged £12 to supply my Radio Pin no. which I've never had due to buying the car at auction and there not being any manuals or service books supplied. I'm a little bit worried as to why the Sensor should fail, although the mechanic suggested it was because the sensor is located very close the the exhaust pipe, sounds like poor design ?? Still, I'm back on the road now with a much lighter wallet

Sorry to hear about the bill

Next time try mobiloife 0800800644 if your car isn't starting and u have a service Hx. (Check out the MB web site)

They did mine in a car park in Portsmouth for free!!!

If no service Hx I woul try it myself but wanted the Diagnostic to exclude the MAF!

The M112 engine is one of the most reliable engines MB have ever made. i wouldnt worry about it too much. Sensors do go from time to time, especially on a 6 year old car.
