Hi,
Looking at purchasing my first MB and am considering a CLK430
They car I have seen is badged as an AMG. Did Mercedes actually manufacture a CLK 430 AMG or has the badge just been added for show ?

Thanks in advance

As far as I know the 430 in the AMG version was called the CLK55 and the D2 was the racing version AMG

OK thanks,
This tells me that this has just been badged as an AMG.
As I thought.

Never understood why people do this. I looked at a CL500 a while ago that was all bling and badged as an AMG when it was pretty obvious that it wasn't one.

In the early days whan AMG were totally independant they'd do all sorts of bespoke work for clients (wheels, bodykits, interiors engines) and slap an AMG badge on.

By 1997 the operation was in-house and the only cars to officially carry the badge were C43, E55, SL60. A sales brochure I have from the time does, howver also list "sports wear" for the CLK, SLK and S Class

So maybe the car has a bodykit and AMG monoblocs (later seen as standard on the CLK 55) along with the badge. Maybe sports suspension too.

Don't let the badge put you off - any small V8 Merc is well worth a look. You might not get the last 10% in terms of power, stopping and turning but I'm sure it'll still be hoot to drive and a real mile-muncher. Plus it's one of the lasy over-engineered Mercs - looked after will run for a long long time.

A CLK? Last of the properly made MB's was the R129. The W202 which the CLK is based on was one of the first under-engineered cars. Not as bad as later ones but no where near as good as previous models
