Hi Folks ,
Firstly , if anyone has the anti glare film coming off their stereo Don't pull it off like I just did .
Anyway I have managed to totally ruin the whole LCD screen on the Audio 20 , I'm still reeling from the total mess I have made . My attempts to clean the film and glue off have left the screen unreadable .
So , thinking about options .

I could get a second hand unit from eBay for the exact model number to guarantee a fit ?
(Would another model number fit if the unit looked the same ? )

Get the LCD screen replaced by a company ? Does anyone know one who could do it ?

Fit an aftermarket unit ? ( Not too keen on this because it may cost a lot more than an eBay replacement ?)

It's not often that a job goes so totally wrong  .
Any ideas ?

Sorry to hear that Wighty, what a nightmare !!
I personally would go the like for like replacement, but if the later unit would be compatible that would be great (I have no idea unfortunately) if it would fit.
Good luck Buddy.

Audio 20 should be available on the second hand market - you could even buy a faulty one (assuming it's not the screen that's faulty...) and swop the screens over if your handy with small screwdrivers and ribbon cables

Hey Wighty, regarding your system I think you have the same one as me audio 20.
SWMBO has a much better system in her SLK , would be interesting to find out if they are compatible.

My E class and the CLK have different shaped fronts , so I doubt yours will be compatible ? There is also the question of all the different wiring ?

The unit will be a single din or double din, the different shaped fronts are generally just trim pieces.

Only very recent cars have fully integrated systems that don’t conform to the din standard.

Oh dear Wighty. Very annoying when stuff like this goes south on you.

If you wan to keep it original, I would just get a 2nd hand jobby from the 'Bay. I'm sure they come up fairly regularly.

I must confess, however, I think I have the same in my 2003 CLK W09, and an not to impressed with the sound quality - which I think is pretty pap TBH. If I jump straight into the W211, its a huge improvement. Currently wrestling whether to keep it stock or put in a modern double din unit.

I would think you could sort it either way fairly easily, for as little or as much, as you want to spend on it.

Wighty, what's wrong with the screen to make it unreadable?

It was it appears a glue residue . I have prised off the front plastic panel that actually covers a second screen which displays everything . I am in the process of polishing the front of this plastic cover with the same things I used on the headlights a few weeks ago . It is so far looking promising .
If I can clean up the plastic and then affix a screen protector like an iPad would have on them it should be an ok job .
If the iPad screen protector plan doesn't work (because of a slight curve in the plastic) , I may try a car clear vinyl wrap over the plastic ?
Worst case I can get a secondhand unit off eBay for £30-80 ish

There is a polish used for hesalite watch crystals (glass face to most people) called polywatch. It's designed specifically to remove scratches from clear plastic. Only £4 or so on Amazon .
