Hi all,

I’m having issues with my CLK Coupe C209 2006. It was running fine and all of a sudden, when putting the gear selector into D,R, it does so with a jerk and the car jolts. I’m also unable to change the gears manually and the comfort and sport settings don’t appear to be working either, It stays in comfort mode. When I drive the car, it only stays in 1st gear, so had it parked up before I cause anymore damage.

I have changed the conductor plate and did a ATF flush, with new filter etc but still had no luck with fixing the problem. Can anyone help with advice or point me in the right direction of what else maybe wrong.

That is the behaviour of the tcu either being offline or in limp mode. The electrical side isn't working, only the mechanical lever side.

Hi Alexander, so I changed the TCU/TCM, changed the connector plug with new O-rings and didn’t find any metal shavings in the pan but I didn’t check or change the solenoids. I guess I will find out more if I ran a diagnostic test and see what codes I’m getting.

When I did my first conductor plate change, there was no change in the gearbox issue (which was the same as you described) I had to scan the car and do a complete transmission reset following the scanning instructions.
The second plate I changed in another transmission didn't require and resetting.
Maybe you will have to do your scan settings.

This is the electroplate. TCU will be in the fuse box or under carpet depending on model. Definitely scan the ECU and see what codes it has next.

Well the TCU (ETC) most likely detected a fault and scrammed into its limp mode, even if your replacement work fixed the fault the ETC will stay scrammed until you reset it with Star system (or equivalent).

As for the solenoids, would have been a good idea to have checked them for continuity while they were out but with a bit of luck you have fixed whatever problem upset the ETC.

"The ETC control unit (N15/3) is installed under the tread plate in the front passenger footwell" - but getting access to it may not help you reset it?

Thanks Rich, I’m hoping after a diagnostic read and module reset the ETC/TCU functions as normal. I’ll update once I’ve done the reset.

Scanned the car with my diagnostics system and got the following faults.

Reset and cleared the codes, will take it for a test drive over the weekend to see if anything reappears.

Well all a bit strange because the TCM (ETC) has not recorded any codes - maybe they were reset previously?

The Electronic Selector Module doesn't participate much electronically as regards transmission control but seems it noticed something it didn't like.

With those codes the transmission should be working normally now (no longer in limp mode) think your issues are elsewhere engine and ESP.

Mystified?
