This had been on my list for a while as a known M271 engine issue . The hose splits and puts the car into limp mode .
I had been waiting for some decent weather to attempt the job . The hose I bought some months ago .

It’s a fiddly Job and you need to make sure you have the correct tools to make it possible/easier .

It was a case of disconnect battery negative lead , remove the airbox/MAF which are connected together .

There is a pre sprung clip under the rear of the airbox whose removal is made a lot easier with the red handled clamp thingy tool in the pictures . The tool allows you to open the clip and keep it open while you do the airbox removal and refit . I had a problem first because the clip was not quite in the best position for the clamp to fit over it , after trying loads of things , I finally got a 3 ft piece of 15mm copper pipe and managed to push the clip round slightly so the clamp could fit on it . There is a picture that shows the end of the clamp on the clip below the cloth which is stuffed in the induction hose .

The ecu on the side of the airbox all needs unplugging as well .

The two bolts at the back of the airbox that hold it down are torx , but one of them has a circular plastic tube above it so there was no way my 3/8” torx socket was going through there . Fortunately YouTube man had suggested that an 8mm long 1/4 socket would fit and do the job .
The actual hose was a doddle to remove after popping the clip-r clip off it , the hose just pulled off . Getting the new one on was fiddly but ok with some 11” long needle nose pliers (I’ve just ordered some more with a bend in as well ) . I used a jubilee clip instead of the original clip-r (there was no way I could get that on again in that space) The picture with the brass coloured stud on the side of the engine shows the lack of space available.

The old hose was in ok condition, bit of swelling at one end , so if you have a 2009 car like mine there is probably no immediate hurry ?

Refit was all straightforward, for a £10 hose I’ve dealt with one of the M271 known issues .

I have an intemittent CEL with P0102 code. Suffering from bad fuel economy and sometimes rough idle. Going to try this fix soon if this is indeed the problem and give the MAF a clean too. Not looking forward to it.

What size jubilee clip did you use for the bottom end of the hose?
Thanks

It was a loose one I had in the toolbox .
if you need me to I can measure the old tube end (I don’t think I’ve thrown it yet)

Id use the correct clip as intended and and not just replace with a jubilee clip of that was not there originally.

Jubilee clips pinch and dont offer the best all-around clamping

True , but if you saw this location it pretty much rules out the clic-r being used new again (pro’s excepted maybe ?)

Says the pro oil changer meister.....

As a side i replaced a fuel filter not long ago on my W220 it had the clic-r, I found bull nosed pliers excellent to push them too.

Managed to get this done, finally. It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. Most difficult thing I found was getting the new hose on the inside valve...it’s a very tight fit. Second most difficult thing was getting the thing out of there with the mass of cables and stuff...especially if you have brake booster line in the middle...I’ve noticed some M271 cars don’t have it there. After a struggle I reverted back to that helpful MAF removal YouTube video and followed his method and eventually got it in. I took it back out and tried again though...I wasn’t happy how the air box fit around the tube.

As suspected the hose in question was damaged and at both ends. The hose is a lot thinner than the modified replacement hose especially the inside end. - Wighty I notice you already had the modified version of the hose in place....either the upgrade has already been done on your car, or later M271 engines were fitted with the better hose in factory.

P0102 code and CEL appears to have gone now....hopefully other codes that I’ve noticed were associated with this and I won’t see them again too. Acceleration and pickup has noticeably improved now. But haven’t really seen improvement in MPG. Short term fuel trim has gone from a high positive figure to high negative figure...maybe the computer needs time to adapt and learn with a few more drive cycles. I did also spray clean the MAF while I had the box out, not that it looked dirty.

I’ve covered approx 10k since I first noticed this CEL intermittently, recently more frequently. Wonder what damage it may have caused..fouled spark plugs maybe?

Helpful video diagnosing P0102 code associated with the hose

Wow , look at the state of your hose ! Good job buddy .
I think i had read that when the ECU is disconnected it takes a while to relearn all the settings ? Time will tell I suppose .
