Hi looking to buy another CLK on an 09 plate with 55k on the clock

Unfortunately there appears to be rust on the rear arches, Pics attached

I understand this is quite common on the CLK’s

Unsure how bad the rust is, anything I can do to prevent it from spreading or slowing down the rust?

Or shall I avoid purchasing the car?

Any decent bodyshop would soon have that sorted - Our SL was the same and is now immaculate again.

Having just done some under car rust converting and black hammerite on both my E and Clk , both 2009 ( the Clk had more rust , some of which was on the rear of the car underside . If you are buying the car I would seriously want to see the rear underside on a ramp , use any rust as part of your negotiating deal .

I did Malcolm's method on my SLK.
It was easy:
Rub down and treat the rust around the return lip, using your chosen method. I primed, then applied smooth Hammerite, being careful not to paint further than the lip itself. Obtain some plastic beading from a Mini specialist supplier - several advertise on the net (remember the original Minis? They had external seams and these were covered with a fairly stiff plastic channel, or beading).
Liberally coat the repaired lip with Waxoyl. Warm the Mini beading in a bucket of hot water to soften it, and curve it to the shape of the bodywork. Roughly cut to length. Apply over the Waxoyled lip and trim to exact length.
It looks like an Oem finish when applied, will not dislodge even under pressure washing, and will not rust again.
Another thank you to departed Malcolm.

You will need to clean the arches out properly, there will be loads of dirt and debris behind the lip all round, get the wheels off and get scrubbing before you try any fix for the rust

great thanks!

So once I done what I need to remove the rust this goes over the inside lip of the arch? how is it secured to avoid from coming off?
It just clips on. There is s black rubber version aswell but be careful of that version as it has steel 'teeth' which could scratch the paint underneath back to metal which will then rust.

There is also a black version thst is identically made to the chrome one above - with no 'teeth'.
Your choice, but I used the black version and it looked 'right' - and unobtrusive.
Depends whether you like bling or not.

The Miniclub website might be worth an email before you do the job.

Alistair, How much did it cost to have it done professionally? Mine are just starting to deteriorate and I'd like to get it right up to snuff. I will be taking to a bodyshop I've used before, but always good to have a figure in mind.

Our SL cost £880 but we also had a couple of other bits done (rear spoiler and front number plate surround).
