I am about to purchase a 3 year old CLK320, I have been running SAAB's for the last twenty years (sad I know). I would be interested to know if anyone has ever converted this model to run on LPG. What is the official Mercedes policy on LPG? Have conversions caused problems? Is there a recommended supplier for Mercedes?. I did convert my last car to LPG with varying degrees of success. I would welcome any comments/advice there is available and look forward to joining your club in the near future.

Following on from this, i have heard something nasty...something we all knew would happen sooner or later. The Government subsidy of LPG may be coming to an end sooner than we thought....i might be totally wrong, but LPG could be priced similar to normal Unleaded soon. As i say im not too sure how relaible this info was...might be worth checking out.

Matt.

It was always on the cards, get us all to convert to the stuff, telling us it would save the planet, when enough people  have invested huge sums of cash in conversions, and are therefore committed, the planet caring government slap on the tax......... how kind!!

Coundn't agree more. They did it to diesel drivers and they will do it to LPG drivers.

Clearly the only answer is to move to the states, and all cruise round in smooth V8's that cost pennies to run!!

Hi Johno

I am a taxi driver (sad I know) I have run a 2.0 Vectra converted to LPG for two years. 4 months ago (after a lot of searching for the right car) I bought a C220D. the extra I pay in fuel is some £20 a week (over1200 miles) & no hassle!!  A colleagues (factory converted) Vectra has been off the road for over two weeks awaiting gas parts. After arguing the supplying Vauxhall dealer said "what do you expect when its done over 100K!!!"

LPG is not all it is cracked up to be & if the post about the government is true then........

Running a Saab for twenty years - well they do last well!

I had also heard rumours about subsidies - but again can't be sure.  Surely they'll wait until more people are committed.

There are 2 sides to the argument you see. After a night out on the lash, when you are staggering towards the Kebab van, then thinking how the h*ll
am i going ot get home.....then a cab is the answer.

However on a hot sunny weekend, a couple of days down by the coast tugging the faithful Madge behind you...what could be nicer.....

God im so on the fence its sickening!!!!

Thanks to everyone for replying, but how did LPG get to being a debate about caravan draggers and taxi drivers? I would still like to know the official Mercedes policy on the matter or don't 'they' listen to this website. It seems I am destined to got my own way and this means a trip to my trusted 'gasman'. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Hi Johno,
I researched LPG about 2 years ago when I considered a Subaru Legacy conversion.
In comparison to other makes, very few Mercedes had been converted, particularly as one goes higher up the Class scale.
I have no knowledge of MB policy but when I enquired
around my local franchised dealers I was met with blank & bemused replies.
Obviously your car would qualify for the Government sponsored installation grant but I consider that in many respects it would be a retrograde step., unless you intend to keep the car for many years.
Even with the current takeup of LPG I believe it would still adversely affect the cars value when you came to sell it.
regards
Ernest

Hi Ernest & Dave

Thanks again for your concerns, I do appreciate what you are both saying. I do like performance cars, my last one a 9000cde turbo not the best I know, but never the less no slouch did not suffer too much on performance after conversion. In fact m son-in-law who inherited the car also has a 9000cse turbo and maintains this one is faster.
I have two problems, I usually keep cars for a long time (10 years plus) and I expect my income to decrease significantley as I wish to retire as soon as practicle, so the aim is to maintain standards but reduce running costs. I also have environmental concerns that push me towards LPG. However having had this car for a week now I love the performance and will do some more research before I make a final decision.

Hi JohnO,
You obviously meet the criteria for such a conversion, I fully sympathise with your position. If you do decide to go ahead. I will be pleased to pass on such information as I have.
Incidentally, performance does not suffer.

regards
Ernest
