Hi I have a CLK220 CDI with 93K. When I start the engine the glow plug light comes on and doesn't go out till nearly a minute?

Time to replace the glow plugs?

On my 11 year old CLK220 glow plug light goes out I start the engine ok it comes on again for about 40 seconds then goes out, it has done this for about 18 months now and the engine starts quickly even down to -3C so I am not going to worry about it.

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
Thats nice for you.

You can wait for them all to fail and then find they are all seized in and break off when attempting to remove them.

Worst case scenario of course :)

Seriously though ........ attend to it sooner than later.

My 12 year old is the same, still starts at -8C so not going to worry about it.

If your car has a dpf i would worry

This can stop the regeneration process leading to a nasty big bill in the future, also puts extra strain on the battery and starter

I've never seen a CLK with a DPF, not saying they don't exist but they were not fitted as standard. And it does not put more strain on battery or starter either, they start first time even with the glow plug light staying on.

If the exhaust pipe is sooty inside , you don't have a dpf . A recent comment by Steve from Avantgarde was saying that the GP,s are not just used for starting , they run constantly on cdi engines...even at motorway speeds . So I would get them (or just the defective one) fixed asap

Correct.
Glow plugs are part of the engine management system and not used just for starting on some engines.

Many of the Asian market vehicles use a +7v or +5v glow plug system, the GP's are in use most of the time the engines running.

But I can see the attitude it "if it works it works" regardless of any warning lights indicating there's a problem.

Your car ....up to you.
:)
