CLK230 Gearbox shift indicator

I have a 1999 CLK230, when I switch the lights on the automatic shaft indicators do not illuminate. I think I have seen them work in the past. I have taken the trim away to reveal wiring to switches etc, but the wiring for the shift illumination is not visible.

Also I am unsure it the W/S gearbox mode swithc is working.

Any ideas?
