CLK 63 AMG Cabriolet
I've been looking at various SL and CLKs and was wondering if anyone knows if they laterly fitted the 5.5 litre (388bhp) V8 and 7 speed box from the SL500 into the CLK500. I've seen a couple with the 5litre (306bhp) and 5 speed box but maybe that's all they did? Appreciate any feedback from knowledgeable members?
...and for those in the know...any tips or advice to look out for on the CLK500 Convertible?
Many thanks Steve

Roughly 06-06 the output of the old engine was increased by some 70 bhp the new engine 5.46 came out with the new generation of SL's late last year.

Any ideas if this unit then made it's way into the CLK500?

Yes it made it into the CLK500 which then made it more powerful than the CLK55AMG - I know because I had one of the latter models! AMG then upped the game by putting the 6.2 into the CLK so as to gain top dog status again. It happened around about the time of the facelift but double check with the dealer if you are looking at one.

That said, my old CLK55AMG cabriolet is still with MB Edinburgh - I've no doubt they are starting to get desperate to get rid of it. They started it off at a shade under £27k and it is down around £18k now... :)

Thanks Brett, appreciate the feedback. Would you say it's better to go for the CLK55AMG or the CLK500 (5.5/388)?

I can't honestly say as I've not driven the more powerful (newer) CLK500, however I DO know that the AMG badge is about more than just the engine. There are numerous suspension, braking, exterior and interior "tweaks" that make it a very special package.

To be honest, if it wasn't for my company changing it's car policy so that they wouldn't pay an allowance if your car was more than five years old, I'd buy it back off of them. The CLS is lovely and far more practical, but it is not special in the same way as the CLK was.

In a lighter car too, and IIRC yours doesn't exactly hang about :D

The rear tyres do not last long on mine, what do they do on an AMG

Show the canvass after 5k miles. And because the rears are wider than the front you cannot even rotate them front to rear :(

Too true,, the joke is that the sizes used by AMG cost to kidneys more than other sizes nearby. I changed the size of mine slightly to overcome this and still have my kidneys, saving some £400.
