Totally agree Malcolm. Mines a standard audio 10 unit which I want to change so that I can use my ipod and make bluetooth calls, common enough nowadays but not so in 2001 when the car was made.

So although I'll change it (probably to a Becker GP7990) I want one that looks suitable to the car. I went to a local car audio place and although all the stuff they showed me was perfect for what I wanted it to do, it just didn't hit the right buttons looks wise. Seems they don't make plain boring old black facia stereo's anymore!

I do like the Becker though. Better start saving the pennies...

Its personal taste though, audio 10 will only play original audio cds and thats soo 1990's now. Now adays its all about IPOD/USB/MP3's

I have an alpine fold out screen which probably isnt to everyones taste but it does alot for me, it has built in bluetooth receiver, Video Ipods connection, plays any format of audio/video and it sits in single din slot maybe not flush with car but it does so much more than standard that you forget about the cons such as onscreen display of track number and position not fully flushed

You're right about the audio 10 not playing anything other than normal audio CD's. I was at the Essex GTG in September and saw another CLK with a non standard Kenwood stereo (did nav, dvd, ipod, bluetooth and even a reversing camera to display what's behind you when you reverse!) that was very much top drawer.

Yes non standard and yes probably not to my taste but sooooo very impressive for it's features and what it can do. And at just under £2k for a comand unit to be retrofit to my car I think I'll manage without the full MB treatment for now.

Wonder if Santa can help out?

I think you are refering to Mark's CLK. I think he has Kenwood double-din unit which takes up the empty slot above the usual stereo place.

If you compare COMAND with any aftermarket units, it will be quarter the cost and has alot more features and look soo much 21st century.

As you touched on the key part already...... ITS ALL ABOUT PERSONAL PREFERENCE and not to everyones taste. I have W208 which had very dated dull black unit which looked so dated and useless so I am pleased with what I got now

That was mine :) And I know its not to everyone's taste, but then most of the things I have done probably fall into the same category lol

It takes up the space that was taken up by my old Comand. Not so sure that comand can come close to my kenwood, at least not on a 02 reg.

Mark, is you kenwood unit with 7" screen with slide down for CD or its 6.5" with CD slot at top? I found that with double din units, if you are in park position the screen with touch the gearstick when sliding out to allow CD.

I agree that new aftermarket units are far sophisticated. I know BLOBCAT has doubledin in his Carvelle and it looks stunning. Command doesnt come close to these units

i did notice the glaring/obvious cd player, yes lol, but did have in mind a kenwood cd/mp3 player in black, which would blend in a bit better with a dull red glow when lit up, would look a bit more tastefull,, it does seem that the engine is the one to go for going by the comments posted, im at the stage where mileage and condition are swaying me to get travelling to get the right car, but this rust issue is a real setback , seems to be hit and miss

Yes it was Mark's that I was referring to and agree with you Malcolm he's done a good job putting it in. Shhh don't want him getting big headed !!!;)

Mind you that's a good point. The Becker unit I'm looking at I can buy for around £250 so how easy are they to install I wonder? I'm happy doing DIY around the house but I've never done any fiddling aorund under the bonnet putting in new stereo's on any car I've owned.

So how easy are CLK's or MB's in general to fit a stereo by yourself? I can do most DIY around the house but I've never done anything like fitting a stereo. A local firm wanted £500 to buy the becker and fit it to the car with the right ipod lead that I'll want. Is it worth doing yourself or am I asking for trouble?

Mark is an expert in this field and he can advise you better than I can. there are adapters on the market so that is all plug and play

if you have the normal iso connections, as I did, then the only addition to the system was a switched feed from the cigarette lighter. The normal wires have only a perm live feed.

even my existing gps connection was the same. Oh, you need a 0.99p aerial adapter as the MB one is a small stubby, and your new radio will come with the normal connections. and thats about it. the Ipod wires are fed under the ashtray section, under the window switch panel, and end up where the drink holder would have been

cant comment on fitting a cd/mp3 player to a mercedes, but other cars ive done it to, involves sliding the the unit out with removal keys and then fitting an adapter block to the original wiring harnes that it connects to shouldnt take more than 10 15 mins, but that was with £50-100 units with 4x 50 watts, which i find more than enough for my needs in volume etc, guess im not a great audiophile lol

And he makes it all sound soooo easy!!!

I may be brave and go for it. Do you need any specialist tools? I've found some audio 10 keys that remove the existing unit on e-bay so I suppose I'll need those. Anything else?

@gmm most other cars have a perm and switched feed. in yours, you will have just a perm feed, so thats the only additional wiring needed

all depends if you have a hole for a single or double din. if you have just a single din slot, you will need to take a hacksaw to it so that you create a double din slot. All things being equal you will need the keys to remove your old radio, maybe an aerial adapter. some scotchloks to add a switched feed via the cigarette lighter, and not much else

Hi Malcom, I've checked my public profile and it seems to be there, in 'biography'

Cheers, Peter.

I am as blind as a bat sometimes,,I have sent it :D:D

Use a 17mm open ended spanner to remove the caps, by levering over the top of the engine to avoid damage to the coil packs

just called about that clk, seller says no rust at all, only thing he can criticise about the car are 3 tiny paint chips not even through to the primer that can hardly be seen, the radiator isnt a valeo, the original wheels and tyres are with it too and its a tip gearbox , has mb service history and independant history as well,, can someone give me a reason to not travel for 5 hrs to see it? lol, im just about to clear my bank account for this thing hahahaha
