Hi

Returning (maybe) member here!
I spent many a stressful hour loving the wife's CLK320, whilst driving a company French thing.
I've since opted out and currently waft about in a 3.0 dtv6 Jag XF....... everything i wanted & needed in a motorway cruiser, whilst scratching a 30year Jag itch - but i really fancy the estate version!
SO whilst I was looking around (£10 / £15k world) I spotted the CLS Shooting Break, which looks awesome, still has the interior from a gentleman's club that the Jag has but without the pain (fear) of looking after a V6 diesel with very British 'niggles' (its a Jaguar sir, they do that)..... I love my fat cat to death but I'm also terrified of it letting go on me 'because it can!'

So esteemed membership - what do we all think collectively of 2013ish 60/70k miles 250CLS AMG Sport Shootingbreaks?

Thanks in advance - I'm getting a little excited now

Jim

Probably a good idea to link the advert if you want comments
No specific car in mind, there are about 4 or 5 as described on Auto trader, but here's one of them

I'm after any known technical issues, bad habits, things that 'need' to have been done.... advice like avoid the models with 'x' - that type of thing?

Thanks
Jim

the 651 can be problematic in higher mileages, I would say same cost wise as the v6 cdi (642). They both balance out IMO. V6 diesel much smoother.

I think either would be as reliable as the jag V6 diesel?

Have you thought about the OM642 V6 diesel EU5?

This is where my money would go

Hi Malcolm

That one's very pretty - but lacking in hound storage (they don't like being jammed into the boot)
I was thinking to get away from v6's and into something luxurious but with a more 'normal' engine.
I realise it would be a bit more workmanlike but I really don't use the 300 horses the Jag has (the last time i hit 60 in under 6 seconds, i forgot why i went by there ) and really begrudge paying the higher service costs of the v6 over the 4pot these days!
Are the 2.1's really it that awful?
Bearing in mind my shortlist is starting to look like 2.2 XF Sportsbreak, 2.1 CLS Shooting Break, 2.1 E class estate (grudgingly) or last up a very recent 2.0 Mondeo
Apparently 2.0 BMWs are just awful in every aspect so they didn't get on the list and Audi A6's seem very dull (and quite thirsty)

So...... 4pot 2.1's.... are they really terrible?

Alex..... most things with bottom end bearings made of cheese are more reliable than the JLR unit (Range Rovers love em for lunch) - although mines been a peach this year (with 5k oil changes for safety's sake )

I was looking at lowish (60/70k) 4 pot engines, simply because I'm more comfy with the little ones

Having had the E350cdi estate for 6 years I’m starting to appreciate the OM642 and it’s reliability so I am a little bias I’d certainly have another in EU5 guise.

Oh dear! In that's case, both sound much more reliable!

I get why you say a 4 pot will do nicely but, I have to say that with large cars the larger engines just make more sense. The 3.0ltr Merc will have a handful less ponies than your Jag (I guess) and a reliable but, dim witted 7G box, so due to this alone even, may be the 3.0 will be a better choice.

A few test drives will help you decide what works for you.

I doubt there’s anything in the real world running costs either in terms of servicing and consumables. The 3.0 has is truly tried and tested for durability. I get an easy 52mpg in my 2007 CLS320 and 2011 S350 bluetec…

Maybe I could play suck it it and see with an older E class estate (3/4k) with a similar engine before I bite the 10 /15k bullet then see how I feel in a year or so

Try a 350 and a 250 - I think I know which you would choose ;). The V6 is magnificent,
In my heart I know it..... I've had 2 petrol V6 mb's and loved them and even a couple of older v6 Fords, now I have a V6 diesel and love that too!
It's the old fashioned accountant in my head that says a 4pot 2l is far more 'sensible' as a company car replacement - all my colleagues have 2.0l a4's a6's 320's and mondeos!
I'm the chap currently with no sense and a big v6 3.0 Jag.... now considering a 3.0 MB as a downsize

I think I shall take the above advice offered and try both, then let my heart pick - my head really has no idea what's going on!

I ran my 911 as a company car replacement… it was (and still is) the most sensible option…:oops::rolleyes:

Exactly what I said to the wife when she mentioned I had said I was keeping the XF until it expired
Then I mentioned Mercedes and she perked up!

There will surely be a glut of pre-EU6 diesels hitting the used market when ULEZ is extended next year and values will crater. I would hold out or at least go for the jugular when haggling.
