Has anyone pulled out the inbuilt Radio/CD to see if there is a way to get to "AUX in" so I can connect an external MP3 player? Does anyone how to even pull it out without breaking bits a pieces on the dashboard?

Isn't there a socket in the glove box?

Rant: why Mercedes in their infinite experience did not provide a simple "aux in" socket ?

Discovery: there is a motorised flap under the stereo unit that opens by the press of a button. Inside there is a removable cartridge/tray and behind you can see the back of the CD/Radio combo and some connectors. I think this could be a provision for a CD cartridge ?

These kits are prohibitively expensive :(

I have not found a removal guide on the link you have provided however I am not sure that there will even be an accessible "aux in" wire somewhere at the back - I presume it will all be in one unit and completely sealed.

So far I have been burning Audio CDs on my laptop using Windows Media Player. It is very quick hard and the quality is great. The problem is where to store them inside the car and having to swap them. I typically put 17-18 tracks per CD.

If only it could read Data DVDs , if only :)

The next step is to buy an FM transmitter with an SD card.
