CLS 320 CDI "jerky creep"

No, not a personal insult, just had this happen for the first time since we got the car (8000 miles ago, car's done a total of 35500, it's a 2006 model).

I'm wondering if it's the same issue I've seen on other threads but I thought I'd ask directly.

What happened was as we pulled to a halt I held the car in D. When I released the brakes to let it creep forward, the creep was juddery, lurching forward every half a second then "resting", as it were. The effect was to sort of rock the car along if you see what I mean. Applying throttle the movement was as smooth as normal. Putting the car in P and turning the engine off and on again cleared the problem and it didn't happen again all day.

Any ideas please? Thanks.

Just to add a bit more info, the last time the car was at my indie's they said they had updated some of the electronics. I don't know if this was restricted to the ECU or included the gearbox. Since they did that I have to say I haven't noticed any difference in performance and the gear changes are as smooth as ever.

Hi EGBM,
I've had a similar issue with my CLS, although i get a few more symptoms..

Engine runs slightly 'lumpy'
Gear changes 1/2/3 are harsh (not as smooth)
Engine appears to be running hotter than normal, with cooling fans operating
Oil (or Diesel) Smell from the middle of the car (which is disconcerting)
From the central/rear/top of the engine (near turbo) is an unusual 'intake' noise, evident when throttle off.

Frequency:
This has only happened 4/5 times since January. without any real reason/sequence of events?

My local main dealer want to keep the car for a week, run it around to see if they can replicate - unlikely me thinks.

Please let me know if you've had any remedy -

Hi Guys,
any update on the problems you described would be appreciated. I have a 2005 CLS CDI with a harsh down shift from 2nd to 1st. MB have no idea what the problem is and charged me anyway. I'm hoping I do not need a transmission rebuild.

You have the 7G box for some reason best known to itself it occasionally has harsh downshifts. There have been many software updates but I'm still not convinced that Mercedes have cured it. I've had quite a lot of updates and it still totally unpredictably will do harsh downshift. It is very uncommon now though so perhaps some of the updates have made a difference.

I have said many times on these boxes, the only correct way to set the fill times on the up/down shifts using star on the road!

Both my R,classes were faultless, Malc even notice how good my last one changed!!

I think this happens if the lock up clutch is engaged erroneously at low rpm in low gear.

Could be that a solenoid or wiring fault (between ETC and gearbox) will develop concerning the lock up clutch.

I must admit that in Coles R class you could not feel a thing when it changed gear,,it was seamless.

I think that these up dates are only as good as the one using the STAR

Did you ever rectify this problem? this is the only other post i have found online which exactly mirrors the same fault as mine please help its killing me!
