Does anyone know if my 07’ 320 cdi has steel or ceramic glow plugs?

The glow plug light on the CLS 320 has started staying on for about 1 minute after starting the engine for the last couple of days. A quick search suggested a glow plug on its way out so I went to ECP and grabbed a set of 6 steel NGK ones. There was an option of ceramic but 6 of those were not in stock.

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- 1.2 vauxhall Corsa 2021 ,orange with a black roof. .
Steel are 4.4v

Ceramic are 7v

Pop one out and have a look on the side .

I'd suspect steel ,but ya never know.

Sadly I don’t have the means to diy this as usual so thrown the plugs I got into the bag with the other service items and will phone the local indy to ask them to book it in asap. If they are wrong then that’s a first for me.

Id have just let the indy get the plugs (assuming its not the relay) as they get them at trade price and a good indy will pass that on.
But good to change all the plugs

It’s in with Mercserve tomorrow.
I’ve told them about the glow plugs and apologised in advance should they turn out to be incorrect.

They said no probs and it’ll all be sorted.

Poor old me thinking glow plugs are steel and ceramic, looks like I need another cup of tea.

No biscuits though got to have some punishment.

Mercserve used the steel ngk glow plugs I supplied.

Cars runs like a new car now, starts instantly, very smooth idle, smoother and very responsive engine on the road, no smells or smoke from the exhaust.

Why are these not scheduled service items like spark plugs?

GP do less wok than SP.
The biggest ache with GP is they can last moons and when one fails best to replace all, but lasting moons means they can seize in the head.
Make a note to yourself to change every 40k if you want to avoid issues. They are cheap enough.

Sod that at £102 a set it’s getting the DSK treatment and being classed as an annual service item! such things should be routine to avoid any random bullsh!t during routine operation.

They will probably last 3-4 years minimum with no issues , just keep a set handy buddy . Yearly is crazy :)

I had a GP fail on my W220 only this year. All replaced with Bosch. So 18 years albeit 75k miles.

Annually is nuts considering SP are usually every 30k-40k.

Each to their own mind.

Fair comments. The CLS is now on 75k.

I ways changed my spark plugs on my Volvo every 10k so that was every 10 weeks as part of a full service and now as it’s used sporadically it’s done annually.

I’ll push the glow plugs out to every couple of years then as part of a fit and Roget regime.

Just thought I’d update this.

So the glow plug light remains on for about a minute or two after starting despite new plugs and relay.

Had a DSK style service at MB Nottingham independents, during the work they diagnosed the issue to a short on one glow plug - they have advised to replace the faulty one so I will tell them to get a new set and drop them in.

Hope this helps others who may still get the glow plug light illuminating after starting despite new plugs and relay.

I thought this had been done but it had not since the last post. However a set of plugs was done at this service and all is now well.
