Hi - going to look at a CLS 55 AMG on Wed - any tips re what to look out for? Any known issues with these cars (or the similar E series)? Car is just out of MB warranty so need to be a bit careful...

Hopefully it will be a good one - if it is, expect a few more posts from me in the coming weeks :)

Cheers,

Jerry

Price, mileage, year, colour?

jib

2005, 51K miles, blue, excellent spec

I think the CLS looks awesome in the dark blue colour so I hope it's OK!

If you rule out silver (I have - it doesn't suit the CLS IMO), that doesn't leave many cars to choose from ;-)

Asking price just under £25K

Cheers,

Jerry

ps - don't really want to start another 'it will be £5K cheaper in 3 months time' thread - mainly interested in mechanical/electrical gremlins I should be on the look out for...

only known issue I have with the CLS is the 7G gearbox but the AMG doesnt have that due to the power output.
Price seems a little high for the age and mileage, MB or Robinsons had a 2006 with 30k on it for £28k but its now sold.

Dark colours suit the CLS nd like you said fantastic looking car but it is MB ugle ducking !!! in some eyes.

I agree silver doesn't suit them. I went for the Cubanite (Brown) ..... the chrome trim round the windows sets it off just right. Mine has the AMG type V wheels - 18" Turbines - drop dead gorgeous...... that's about all I share with your prospective beast.

Rear tyres are £250 a corner! Fronts £180. Will you know how many sets she's had?

After 6 weeks I'm settling into it. It feels cramp but very long legged after the E class. The front toe in on mine was ridiculous with tyre wear to show for it - over 12mm difference measuring between front and rear edges of tyres at 150mm above ground. Back was ok just 2mm toe in and wear even.

I'm getting used to the air suspension which needs changing to suit road speed. I can't do comfort at speed! Getting it in the garage is a trial - its wider than the E class ......I have to fold the mirrors! .... but it's no problem driving on narrow lanes ....like the E class it's easy to position on the road.

Make sure the gearbox is behaving itself. Mechanically they are an E Class and MB seem to have sorted out all the early problems which troubled the W211.

Hope she pleases......

Thanks for the comments all! I'm encouraged by the lack of response so far, I'm sure if there were some major known issues you guys would know about them... maybe MB really did get their QC act together by the time the CLS was launched...

Seabadger - that Cubanite colour looks amazing in the brochure, pretty unusual so a brave choice! I don't think I've seen one on the road - have you posted any pics anywhere? It reminds me of one of the classic, and best, Citroen DS colours - Brun Scarabee or something like that I think it's called - I hope you won't be offended by my comparing it to a DS (I have a theory that the CLS appeals to a similar set of people to the DS anyway..... it's all in the stealth like styling ;-) )

Rear tyres? - my Lotus Europa wears them out in well under 10K miles and they are £225 a corner - so hopefully the CLS will be more or less on a par with that....!

Cheers

Do not forget that cars from a MB dealer come with a 12 month guarantee and thats worth having. Yes as said the AMG does not have the 7G box so thats fine as nothing wrong with the 722.6.

Yes the darker colours are very nice, Cubanite is lovely

Good luck and very nice cars

the Cls is the DADDY, especially with the best sounding engine in the world, supercharger pulleys can squeak a little but only from cold so make sure the car is started from cold so as you can hear the whin that it makes,(about a 1000 to fix) also trye wear can be extreme but this is troughout the range not just the AMG.
Only problem with the cls is everytime i try to get out of them i bang my head off the a pillar but this could be due to the fact that i am too familar with E classes and always kinda jump up and out of those.
Have no fear the CLS is the ultimate mercedes unless you consider the CL which is vastley more expensive. Hope you havve many happy mile with your new purchase and i am sure it will always put a grin on your face.

Hi there

I got a CLS55 AMG on Christmas Eve and went to see a few but only wanted silver as I thought the blues/blacks were bit dull and lost on the car - each to their own! :)

Am loving it so far and got it from a main dealer, so have the warranty etc

Just for the record. Cubanite Silver -see thumbnail - is brown but described in the Registration Doc as Grey. Same colour as the wife's New Civic in Galaxy Grey. Funny thing is I also had a brown Lotus Elan S4 fixed head coupe in 1974.......didn't wear tyres out like your's though!
