As the family SUV was crashed, we need a new car. I have chosen to diverge from an SUV for a change and I am stumped on which to choose. CLS 350 Sport from new or a newish S-Class (link below). I do not need much space, a sporty drive would be nice and speed as well, both will be diesels. Which is better though?

- Link to the S-Class.

I will choose the S class hands down. I love S class with AMG body kit. It really looks sexy. Also the luxury and quality of finish in the S class are unbeatable. In short, the S class is understated.

I think am more swayed to the S-Class as well. The luxury is of an amazing standard.

The three points that swung our decision in favour of the S were:
-- the S has three seats in the rear: a necessity when you have three grand-children.
-- the S is more spacious than the CLS, which we both found somewhat claustrophobic.
-- last (and not least), the comfort in the S, which won hands down over both the E and the CLS.

But I do like the lines of the CLS ;)

I have no idea but it was switched of in the COMAND settings. I was thinking this HK isn't that special and started digging through the options and there it was, OFF.

Very definitely ON now! :D

One cannot do that on the newer NGT 2.5/3 system

Distronic is so nice

+1

I don't think I would buy any model of Merc without the Distronic option. Wow, this thing is really nice. I enabled it last week on the M25 motorway and it brakes and accelerates by itself without me putting down my foot. The braking accuracy is great but as a man made thing, my foot is always close enough to intervene. :)

I found the acceleration under Distronic control was quite erm, rapid..

Is it the same as with CC where acceleration mimics the rate applied by the driver before setting CC on?

Thank you :D the Bose is good, but the HK is better from a fidelity point of view and sound accuracy, I will test it out one day

To be honest Malcolm, Mercedes did not improve the comand graphics of the NTG 3 in the new S class. Played around with one today at Mercedes Mk and discovered that there is no big difference between the 2012 comand & the 2007 NTG 3.

The distronic reacts like the cruise control in a way. For instance, if you set the distronic to a certain speed limit, you can drive beyond the speed limit and it will warn you of excess speed while the CC will not allow you drive past the set limit.

Yes it is and this is one danger in the wet, there was the driver who raced up on a slip road onto a motorway with the distronic set to over 70, she met a car in front and the car in front moved over to let her pass, the road was wet, the car changed down and spun her into the barrier. this was an extreme case.

I have been using it for nearly 7 years now, I would never use it as in the above case and only engage it once on the motorway.

When a driver overtakes you and cuts in too quick, it will cause your car to brake slightly. Though I use it on B roads a lot its not good on long descents but in general I would never go back to just CC. On the A30 going to the meet with long hold ups it really came into its own.
