Hi all,
ive recently baught a 190 2.3-16, and its making a clunking noise from the rear when going over potholes and over speed humps, had it checked my merc, and they reconed it was the rear (front) subframe mounts, so i changed them but no change, the noise is still there, ive checked the rear mounts, and they seem ok. The backend seems to wander about a lot too?
Anyone have any ideas?
p.s, ive checked all suspension arms etc, and there is no free play on either back wheel.

Did you check the diff mounts?

Anti roll links?

dont know your model but my W124 had same symptoms which turned out to be worn rear anti roll links. Easy to replace if it is but can't imagine that you/merc could have missed it.

I don't kow if the set up is the same but my dad found on his 190E that the rear shocks had been replaced and the washers/spacers had not been fitted in the correct order at the top of the turrets in the boot. This resulted in a clunking noise as you described. Took us about an hour to repair.

NormanB, i thought it could have been the tail section, so i removed it and took it for a run and the clunking was still there!!!
230TErry, you may have given me an idea, ill look into the shocks as i know that the rear subframe mounts (front) had been assembled with the rubber on the washer facing downwards!!!! so its possible that the previous owner!!!! may have assembled these the wrong way too, , Ill let you know how i get on
